MLS Expansion Draft RESULTS: Who Did Orlando City Select?

Published

on

The MLS Expansion Draft today was a rapid fire affair, with neither team waiting longer than a few moments on any selection.

There were no celebratory walks across the stage or videos of crying friends and families. Major League Soccer and Orlando City streamed the audio and video from both teams "war rooms" on Youtube, however there wasn't much drama to be had. The whole ordeal took right around 20 minutes, and neither team needed more than a moment or two for any of their selection.

Orlando made a few surprise selections, along with a few that make quite a bit of sense.

Either way, Orlando City is now ten players closer to building their opening day MLS roster. Here's who they selected in each round:

  1. Donovan Ricketts, GK, Portland Timbers
  2. Tony Cascio, MF, Houston Dynamo
  3. Jalil Anibaba, D, Seattle Sounders
  4. Pedro Ribeiro, MF, Philadelphia Union
  5. Lewis Neal, MF, D.C. United
  6. Jairo Arrieta, F, Columbus Crew
  7. Heath Pearce, D, Montreal Impact
  8. Danny Mwanga, F, Colorado Rapids
  9. Mark Sherrod, F, Houston Dynamo
  10. Eric Gehrig, D, Columbus Crew

Donovan Ricketts was a shock to almost everyone as the first pick. Will the veteran keeper be the starter until Tally Hall returns from injury mid-season, or is he trade-bait for Orlando to pick up another valuable piece after the draft?

Jalil Anibaba may slot in right away as a starting center back has already been traded to Sporting KC as part of the Aurelien Collin deal, but Tony Cascio and Pedro Ribeiro will provide valuable midfield depth.

Stay tuned for more in depth analysis of Orlando's selections and how they will fit into coach Adrian Heath's system.
