With the fourth pick in the second round (25th overall) of the MLS SuperDraft, Orlando has selected Akeil Barrett from the University of Tulsa.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Barrett transferred from Akron after his freshman year and went on to start 34 of 41 matches over the next two years for Tulsa. In his junior season, he scored seven goals and eight assists in 18 matches.

At five-foot-seven and 130 pounds, the slightly built winger will certainly look to add some weight and muscle to his frame before he earns any playing time in Major League Soccer. With a surfeit of wingers already on the pro roster, one might expect the Barrett will spend some time with Orlando USL Pro affiliate Louisville City FC in 2015.

Barrett was only offered a contract this week after his late addition to the MLS combine. Still, it’s telling that he was able to impress MLS enough during the short combine to earn that offer.

At the podium, Akeil said, “First and foremost I want to thank God for being here…Let’s go Orlando City!”. Barrett will be the last pick of the day for Orlando, barring any unexpected trades.
