MLS Draft 2015: Orlando City Selects Sidney Rivera At No. 63

Orlando City SC has added yet another forward to the roster, selecting Sidney Rivera from Old Dominion University with the 63rd overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft.

Sidney led ODU to its first-ever Conference USA title in 2014, scoring eight goals across six matches to end the season. The Monarchs made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament, where they lost in heart-breaking fashion to Georgetown on a last-second goal.

ODU coach Alan Dawson had this to say about Rivera:

“Sidney is a gifted attacking player who combines his physical size with his natural instincts around goal. He adds another dimension to our attack.”

Like third-round selection Earl Edwards Jr., Rivera also captained his squad in 2014.

With so many forwards already on the roster and a 4-2-3-1 formation that only features one on the field, it’s likely Rivera will start the season with USL Pro affiliate Louisville City FC. It’s exceedingly rare for fourth-round MLS Draft picks to play at all in their first year in MLS.

Still, at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, Rivera has the build to compete in Major League Soccer in the future. Look for him to feature prominently for Louisville in 2015, and perhaps fight for a spot on the Orlando roster in 2016.
