MLS Week 3 Recap: Draws, Draws, and More Draws

After watching Vancouver steal three points (or accept Ceren's gift of a foul, depending on who you ask), I think we could all afford to get our minds off the nightmare and take a look at the other action around the league.

New England Revolution 0 – 0 Montreal Impact

When two pointless teams squared off in Foxborough, we knew somebody's "0" had to go.

We were provided with a 0-0 result.

Regardless, one point goes to each side as they look to garner some momentum early in the season.

After losing both Cameron Porter and Dominic Oduro to injuries in the first half, Hassoun Camara was sent off for forgetting he was playing futbol, not American football.

Lee Nguyen found enough space a few minutes later to try his hand at a long range snipe, but Evan Busch was having none of it.

Colorado Rapids 0 – 0 New York City FC

NYCFC never seemed to get going in this one, as Dillon Powers and the Rapids were aggressive from the kickoff, carrying the action with stellar team play and forcing Josh Saunders to work from the game’s opening minutes.

Gabriel Torres came at him after a rough first touch in the eighth minute.

And Mark Burch kept him on his toes in the 15th with this try from outside the box.

David VIlla would force the issue a bit in the second half, but neither team could send a ball home. As the game neared the finish, NYCFC would see their bad luck get worse in the 82nd when Shay Facey ate a yellow card that sent him off the pitch.

In true Colorado Rapids form, the side refused to capitalize on the man advantage, extending their winless streak to 16 games, while limping to the finish.

Philadelphia Union 0 – 2 FC Dallas

After most of the first half saw little promising play from the Union, Philadelphia midfielder Zach Pfeffer channeled his inner Dusty Rhodes and was promptly sent off, leaving his side a man down.

Tesho Akindele was the first to take advantage, outworking the defense for this breakaway to beat Rais Mbolhi just minutes into the second half.

It was beautiful team play that led to the exploitation of the advantage and second goal, as Ryan Hollingshead wound up with a chance he slid neatly into the bottom left corner.

Brotherly Game is wondering if they'll ever win again, while Big D Soccer are enjoying the best start for their club in franchise history.

Sporting Kansas City 0 – 0 Portland Timbers

In a game featuring two clubs off to disappointing starts to the year, the disappointment continued. With both clubs pressing forward and taking chances. Ike Opara put a powerful head on the ball off an early corner kick, but pushed the ball a bit wide.

Our friend Dom Dwyer looked to have a chance in the 15th, but was deflected just high of the crossbar.

Kansas City kept Darlington Nagbe under wraps for most of the game, stifling Portland’s attack before it could really get off the ground. See what The Blue Testament and Stumptown Footy think their sides need to do to turn around their fortunes.

LA Galaxy 1 – 1 Houston Dynamo

The action came early in this tie, as Robbie Keane looked to deliver the Dynamo their second straight loss with a goal in the third minute of play. Nathan Sturgis answered quickly for Houston,

Both sides tightened up their defense, but the keepers couldn’t quite take the day off. Tyler Deric saved the day for Houston with another great stop in what’s becoming a habit for the thief of goals.

New York Red Bulls 2 – 0 D.C. United

Our next home game enemies had a rough outing against the Red Bulls, as Bill Hamid was unable to contain the New York attack. Dax McCarty linked up with the outstanding Bradley Wright-Phillips to put the first marker on the board. Check out this touch by BWP and try not to cry about the quality of our attack thus far.

In the second half, it was BWP setting the table for Lloyd Sam for the insurance goal, just inside the near post, putting New York up for good in the 71st minute, and capitalizing on a defensive miscue that left Hamid on an island.

San Jose Earthquakes 2 – 1 Chicago Fire

The fire remain winless thus far, sporting an 0-3-0 record and a lot of question marks out of the gate. SJ rookie Fatai Alashe was the recipient of a wild play inside the box off a set piece when Fire keeper Sean Johnson whiffed on an attempted punch at the ball.

Johnson again came up foul on a San Jose set piece, failing to corral the shot and setting Ty Harden up for a tapper and a 2-0 lead.

With his side down big, Harry Shipp slipped past defenders and was found by Joevin Jones looking to spark a comeback.

In the end, Chicago did not have answers for the Earthquake defense, and would be on the wrong end of the 2-1 finish. Center Line Soccer and Hot Time In Old Town break down the action for your reading pleasure.

A lot of draws this weekend, but some truly brilliant play. Joevin Jones' slick through ball to Shipp was impressive, and that touch by Bradley Wright-Phillips is currently making the run on highlight shows. What was your favorite play of the week?
