Only two more days until game day. Time to start getting pumped! This morning we have some interesting pieces that cover a wide range of news around the country and league. So, without further adieu, here are this morning’s Lion Links!
Denmark 3-2 USA
The post-World Cup struggles continue for the USMNT as the Americans lost 3-2 at Denmark last night. The game opened up with a great take from Jozy Altidore. The U.S. would give up that lead in the 33rd minute when Nicklas Bendtner found the back of the net for the first of three goals on the night. The Yanks went back ahead in the second half, after good buildup play from Altidore and his strike partner Aron Johannsson. But Bendtner struck twice late in the match to leave USA fans feeling that same disappointment that has lingered for nine months now.
The good news? Orlando City star Brek Shea came off the bench to play 45 minutes. Shea looked like he belonged on the pitch, making hard tackles and playing a role in a few decent chances for the U.S. Oddly though, Shea came in and played left mid rather than left back. With Klinsmann’s recent plaudits for the Lion at left back, it is peculiar that he would choose to play him in the midfield. It’s a positive sign that he likes Shea and wanted to get him on the field, though.
Minnesota United FC to MLS
It is finally official! Standout NASL franchise Minnesota United FC has been welcomed as the 23rd team in MLS. The key to MUFC outbidding the Minnesota Vikings was the ownership group’s dedication to playing in a downtown, soccer-specific stadium. The article says that the architectural firm behind the MLS stadiums in Colorado, Kansas City, Houston, and Orlando will take on the job.
The article from Brian Strauss details the history of professional soccer in Minnesota. The Minnesota Thunder, the club that would eventually become MUFC, was launched by Buzz Lagos in the early 1990s.
Beckham in Miami
This report from the Miami Herald has given insight to the most recent updates on the “MLS to Miami” front. Beckham’s first big event this trip was Tommy Hilfiger’s birthday party. At the party, Beckham chatted up Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine. The two discussed a potential stadium site next to Marlins Park.
Beckham’s partner in bringing MLS back to Miami, Spring CEO Marcelo Claure, has also been present on the business trip. He notably spoke to Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado about another potential stadium site in the Overtown neighborhood.
The article goes into deep details regarding the politics and negotiations involved with bringing a team to the county. Needless to say, the group is running out of time to make it happen.
Kaká Buys Mansion
The Brazilian superstar is putting roots down in the Orlando area. Kaká has recently purchased a $3.4 million dollar house from the family of former Magic CEO Bob Vander Weide. The mansion is in the exclusive neighborhood of Isleworth, alongside homes of Ken Griffey Jr., Shaq, and more of the area’s most rich and famous.
Lampard to NYCFC?
Frank Lampard will be in attendance as New York City FC hosts Sporting Kansas City this Saturday at Yankee Stadium. Jason Kreis has told SBISoccer.com that the English midfielder will be visiting this weekend during the international break. Let’s just hope he doesn’t pull out early like last time.
