Around MLS – Highlights and Results from Week 6

It happened, folks. For the first time in what feels like 14 years, our purple-clad lads traveled to the opposite corner of the continental United States to bring three points back to us in what has to be considered the best late Easter, Passover, or if you're like me, just plain ol' Sunday present in the history of the written word in the form of three points.

Soothing, right?

We've loads of coverage over the beauty that was Cyle Larin's goal and Kaká's PK, so here we're going to have ourselves a look at what the rest of the league was up to this weekend.

FC Dallas 0 – 4 Colorado Rapids

Speaking of "it finally happened," Colorado managed not only to break their over 600 minute goalless streak, but also their MLS record-tying 18-game winless streak, in a fantastic 4-0 thrashing over those poor souls at FC Dallas.

Rookie forward Dominque Badji decided he'd had enough of being the butt of jokes across the league just two minutes into the game, sizing up the keeper for this goal to send the entire state of Colorado into a state of shock and disbelief.

DIllon Powers, Gabriel Torres, and Dillon Serna would all chip in along the way in what will surely be a memorable day for all three of the Rapids’ fans that are still left after that horrendous stretch of what I loosely refer to as “soccer” that Colorado was putting out.

Burgundy Wave is positively losing their minds while Big D Soccer is reading up on that Dynamo Theory looking for a change of faith.

New England Revolution 0 – 0 Columbus Crew

Despite the return of USMNT rep Jermaine Jones and the form of Lee Nguyen, this game ended in a 0-0 draw that was mostly an entertaining, chippy contest full of cries for fouls and chirps between players on the pitch.

After many close calls and even more fouls or non-calls, Nguyen had the best shot to break the tie in the 65th with a free kick just outside the box.

Allllllllmost.

Philadelphia Union 2 – 1 New York City FC

In front of a sellout crowd at PPL Park, the Union snapped their three-game losing streak and won their first game of the season at the expense of expansion side New York City FC.

Following Zach Pfeffer’s tally to put the Union up one, a moment of brilliance started by David Villa evened the game up in the 55th minute.

The sides looked to be headed to a draw, until Vincent Nogueira worked some stoppage time magic to steal three points.

They're going nuts at Brotherly Game, while more and more Yanks learn they have an MLS team over at Hudson River Blue.

D.C. United 2 – 2 New York Red Bulls

Perry Kitchen got things started for United, scoring twice before Damien Perinelle was able to get the energy drink Yanks on the board less than a minute after the second goal.

It appeared to be all for naught, until Lloyd Sam corralled a Sacha Klejstan rebound to equalize in the 90th minute and make the fans forget, even if only for a second, that they’re actually from New Jersey.

Black and Red United is trying to figure out what went wrong, while Once A Metro is still learning how to read a map.

Houston Dynamo 3 – 0 Montreal Impact

The Dynamo piled it on Montreal, scoring three after only scoring twice in the last four games. Giles Barnes got the fun started, redirecting a Brad Davis free kick that was virtually unstoppable.

Houston would tack two more on for funsies when Rob Lovejoy came on in the second half, changing the game with his pace and notching a goal and an assist in just an eight-minute span to send Houston cruising toward victory.

They’re still talking about Lovejoy at Dynamo Theory, while the team at Mount Royal Soccer is squarely focused on the Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Sporting Kansas City 0 – 0 Real Salt Lake

Both sides pressed forward early, but neither seemed capable of beating the keeper on this day. Krisztian Nemeth came excruciatingly close after the break, only to squarely find the post. Jacob Peterson ensured the result when his rebound went wide of the net.

Real Salt Lake remains unbeaten, while Sporting KC drew for the third time at home.

San Jose Earthquakes 1 – 0 Vancouver Whitecaps

The Earthquakes christened the lights at their new stadium with a win over what has been the strongest team in MLS to this point of the season, on the heels of a wacky sequence that ended with a Sanna Nyassi goal, after two shots were turned away by David Ousted on the possession.

The defense would carry the Quakes the rest of the way, locking down Vancouver to the tune of just five shots, none on goal.

Center Line Soccer is over the moon, while Eighty Six Forever is trying to move on to next week.

LA Galaxy 1 – 0 Seattle Sounders

The second half of Sunday's double header was a big one, with these two western conference powerhouses squaring off on FOX Sports 1 in a thrilling encounter under the bright lights of prime time.

There was no Robbie Keane or Clint Dempsey, but that didn’t stop these sides from wowing the audience with their skill. Alan Gordon would become the hero early in the first half, heading home what would go on to be the game winner in front of a sold out crowd at the StubHub Center.

Galaxy keeper Jamie Penedo was put to work, making 10 saves — including four against Dempsey stand-in Lamar Neagle — but he was up to the challenge to extend LA’s home winning streak in the series to 10 games.
