The Mane Land MLS Power Rankings: Week 7

It has occurred to me that some of you weren't pleased with last week's rankings.

As always, if you need a recap on this week's action, say hello to Wade Williams.

1. LA Galaxy (Last Week: 1)

They got lucky, I know, but a W is a W.

2. NY Red Bulls (Last Week: 2)

From a totally neutral MLS perspective, wouldn't it be cool to see Energy Drink FC make a run for MLS Cup this year? They fired a beloved coach (Petke) and lost the best player in club history (Henry), but still are only five points from being the league leaders with three matches in hand. Throw in the fact that they have a new cross-state rival, and this story is the sort of thing that Don Garber has been hoping for since before he lost his hair.

3. Vancouver Whitecaps (Last Week: 3)

4. Seattle Sounders (Last Week: 4)

The top four stays the same this week. Why? Each team took care of business this week, and that's no reason to reorganize anything. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Is Obafemi Martins the second best non-Landon Donovan DP behind Robbie Keane?

Oba: 56 matches, 29 goals, 18 assissts, Points (Goals+Assists) Per Game: .84

Robbie Keane: 88 matches, 55 goals, 35 assists, 1.02 PPG.

5. FC Dallas (Last Week: 6)

7. New England Revolution (Last Week: 12)

They're back! New England sits sixth in the Supporter's Shield standings with 11 points from seven games. This team has an embarrassment of attacking talent and, don't look now, but Jermaine Jones is back.

The only thing that might hold New England back this season? Charlie Davies' goal celebration. At some point this might become retro throwback, but we're not there yet. He might as well do the twist after every goal.

8. Real Salt Lake (Last Week: 7)

9. Columbus Crew (Last Week: 9)

Let's not kid ourselves, Rafael Ramos' brain fart certainly helped Columbus this week, but this was always going to be a difficult road match for Orlando. It's not like the Crew aren't good. They made the playoffs last season, and only got better by adding Kei Kamara. Despite what it may look like, this wasn't that bad of a loss for the Lions.

10. San Jose Earthquakes (Last Week: 10)

11. Sporting Kansas City (Last Week: 11)

12. Portland Timbers (Last Week: 15)

13. Chicago Fire (Last Week: 14)

14. Houston Dynamo (Last Week: 16)

15. Orlando City SC (Last Week: 13)

16. New York City FC (Last Week: 8)

The middle of the pack in MLS is more crowded than Ellis Island the day Vito Corleone made it to America. Eventually someone will come down with smallpox and drop out, but until then we'll have to sort through a lot of mess and change some last names.

Three points separate the eighth place team (San Jose) from the 18th place team (Philly). To boot, the highest scoring team in that group is also the last team of that group (Philly again). Perhaps the overinflated, 12-team playoff this year will be a good thing after all, because it looks like there's a good chance that 16 teams will at least have some argument for playoff contention in the closing weeks.

17. Philadelphia Union (Last Week: 18)

What are the chances that Maurice Edu's move to center back earns him another look from Jurgen Klinsmann?

18. Toronto FC (Last Week: 17)

I’m still hopeful for Toronto because of Sebastian Giovinco’s “Eff this, I’m just gonna do it myself” tear at the end of the Dallas match. If something positive doesn’t happen for Toronto soon, I think Greg Vanney will be out of a job. MLSE didn’t spend all that money two years in a row to be laughed at.
