Orlando City vs. Chicago Fire: Final Score 3-2, as Lions Force a Pair of Own Goals to Win

Orlando City lives and breathes drama.

For the second week in a row, the Lions fell behind a goal within the first 10 minutes of the match, but thanks to a pair of own goals, including one that put them ahead in the 86th minute, Orlando City was able to fight back for a 3-2 win over the Chicago Fire in front of 20,124 at Toyota Park on Saturday night.

The win over Chicago was Orlando City’s first over an Eastern Conference opponent this season, and third win on the road in 2015, extending the current unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2).

Orlando City trailed 2-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining, when Cyle Larin, who had been subbed on for Pedro Ribeiro less than 20 minutes earlier, blasted a shot that beat goalkeeper Jon Busch from about 25 yards out to level the score at 2-2.

Moments later, Adailton, whose own goal leveled things up late in the first half, knocked in what was supposed to be a pass across the goal by Carlos Rivas. Adailton’s second own goal of the night capped off a rough evening for the young Brazilian defender.

The Fire out-shot Orlando City 19-11, but the Lions dominated in both the possession (63.1 percent) and passing games to take home the three points.

Chicago vaulted out to the early 1-0 lead, thanks to an easy tap-in goal from Kennedy Igboananike, off of a short-corner that was played up top to Razvan Cocis. He moved the ball into the box to David Accam, who found Igboananike sneaking past the Orlando City defense at the far post to knock in just his second goal of the season.

Neither team really flashed any skills early. Both sides came out with the same game plan to play through the wings, leaving very little action in the midfield. With Orlando playing mainly through Luke Boden on the left and Eric Avila and Rafael Ramos on the right, the Lions weren’t able to get much going on the attack.

Their first real chance of the game came 17 minutes in when Boden whipped a cross into the box that found Ribeiro, who settled it down on off his chest before flicking a shot at goalkeeper Busch that was saved and cleared away.

Aurelien Collin, who picked up a weak yellow in the 25th minute, made a couple of big defensive plays in the first half. The first came 36 minutes in, when he slid down to block a shot by Accam, who was serviced into the box on a great midfield through ball from Cocis. Moments before the half, it was Collin again who flew in on the challenge to take the ball away from the speedy Accam at the top of the penalty area.

For the second time this season, Ribeiro forced an own goal. Crowding Adailton against the goal, the Chicago defender unwittingly put the Lions on the board and leveled the score at 1-1 just before the end of the first half. Off a corner, Sean St. Ledger headed a shot on goal from the far post. Busch parried it away, but off of his own defender for the own goal.

It took no more than 11 minutes into the second half for Accam to find the net and put the Fire up, 2-1. Igboananike led a quick counterattack down the field. As the ball found its way to Harry Shipp, he sent a quick pass into the box to Accam, who was open in space to bend it around Tally Hall for the goal just inside the far post.

Chicago continued to threaten while Orlando City played its possession-based attack that did more harm than good at times. But they weren’t able to muster anything up until the closing minutes, to keep the celebrations in Orlando from breaking out.

Orlando City will get the next seven days off before welcoming D.C. United back to town for a Sunday night matchup at the Citrus Bowl on June 14 at 7 p.m.
