Lion Links: 6/15/15

It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t always pretty, but Orlando City’s 1-0 win over D.C. United on Sunday was big. With a victory over the Eastern Conference frontrunners, the Lions catapulted themselves into third place in the table. Not to mention, Orlando ran their unbeaten streak to five games.

Recapping the win vs. D.C. United

Bill Hamid's had Orlando City's number in their first two meetings this season. When he stopped Kaká first half penalty kick, it looked like the young keeper's dominance over Orlando City was going to continue. But Kaká wouldn't be denied as his header off the penalty deflection proved to be the difference in the 1-0 victory.

Sepp Blatter may not resign as FIFA president

Because your Monday couldn't get any worse right?

According to a report from Swiss newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag, Sepp Blatter is reconsidering his decision to resign as president of FIFA. You'll recall that Blatter initially decided to step down as FIFA boss only days after being re-elected for a fifth term as president of soccer's governing body.

Blatter’s resignation came after the U.S. Department of Justice arrested several FIFA executives and appeared to have their sights set on bringing down Blatter himself. Something about accepting $10 million dollars in bribes from South African officials as payment for hosting the 2010 World Cup.

None of the candidates to replace Blatter are close to receiving a majority vote, with many African and Asian nations still pledging their support to the former president. That's…just great.

United States knocked out of U-20 World Cup

It wasn't quite USA vs. Belgium, but this one still hurts.

The U-20 U.S. Men's National Team was knocked out of the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand on Sunday, after losing to Serbia 0(6)-0(5) on penalty kicks.

The Americans were unable to generate much on offense through 120 minutes, managing just two shots on target throughout the match. Once the game went to penalties, U.S. goalkeeper Zack Steffen put on a goalkeeping clinic worthy of bringing his country the victory. With Serbia needing to convert only a single penalty to secure a birth in the quarterfinals, Steffen denied them not once but twice with diving saves. Unfortunately for Steffen, after the U.S. failed to put their next two shots on frame, Serbia would not be denied a third time.

With the win, Serbia will face Mali in the semifinals of the tournament. The U.S. has not reached the semifinals of the U-20 World Cup since 1989.

Cyle Larin scores as Canada opens World Cup qualifying

Canada began their quest for a second-ever World Cup appearance last week, and Cyle Larin drew a penalty and found the back of the net for Les Rouges in a 2-0 win over Dominica. It was an unbelievable performance for Larin, who figures to be a star for the Canadians throughout this upcoming World Cup cycle.

It was Larin's second goal for the national team, as Canada goes up 2-0 on aggregate against Dominica. The return leg will be played at BMO Field in Toronto on Tuesday.
