Lion Links: 6/16/15
Another Tuesday; another work week to endure. However, work weeks are much easier to deal with coming off the heels of an Orlando City win. While you’re racing toward another weekend and Lions game, check out today’s Lion Links.
St. Ledger and Collin Make Team of the Week Rosters
Orlando City continues its streak of making Team of the Week rosters for various publications. This week, Sean St. Ledger and Aurelien Collin represent the Lions on ESPN FC’s website, while St. Ledger made MLS’s. Both players played the full 90 minutes for Orlando City and were key in holding D.C. United scoreless. Collin helped OCSC’s defense immensely, clearing balls deep into Orlando City’s defense. St. Ledger had one foul while being fouled five times, while Collin had two fouls while being fouled three times.
Orlando City Part Of Hydration History
If you were part of the 30,054 that attended the Citrus Bowl Sunday, you know it was hot. Like, really hot. Like, stay-under-your-tailgate-pop-up-cover-and-keep-all-movements-to-a-minimum hot. The 94-degree temperatures were warm enough to enact MLS’ mandatory hydration breaks that were created before the start of the season. When temperatures reach over 89.6 degrees, a hydration break is enforced at points during the game. While there was a break in a 2009 match-up between Real Salt Lake and Houston, this is the first game in which the breaks were enforced.
Charleston Battery Prepare For Round Two Against Orlando City
Wednesday, Orlando City and the Charleston Battery face off in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. This is the second match-up between the two clubs; on Feb. 25, the Lions drew 1-1 against the Battery in the Carolina Challenge Cup with a little help from Mother Nature. Charleston hasn’t had much success against Orlando over the Battery’s time in USL Pro, going 1-2-2 at home. Charleston was also winless at Orlando City during that period. The Battery drew against the Richmond Kickers last weekend but are 2-0 against Florida teams this year in the U.S. Open Cup. Charleston will look to stop an Orlando City team that hasn’t lost in five games and will be following the energy of their head coach.
NYCFC to sign Andoni and Angelino?
Remember last week when I noted that it didn’t seem Andrea Pirlo would be signing with New York City FC? It seems like the club has come up with a backup plan, as team play-by-play/ESPN Deportes announcer Roberto Abramowitz is reporting the club will sign Andoni Iraola from Athletic Bilbao and Manchester City youth prospect José Ángel Tasande, best known as Angelino. The signing will give the team a mix of youth and veteran players, as the 32-year-old Andoni has logged 510 appearances in 12 years. Angelino will have the opportunity to gain more professional playing experience, though it will be interesting to see if how long he stays with NYCFC, given their affiliation with Manchester City.
Wambach Feels World Cup Pressure
Abby Wambach hears you.
Ok, maybe not you, specifically, but she understands the expectations heaped on the United States Women’s National Team for this year’s World Cup. The U.S. leads Group D with four points and plays Nigeria at 8 tonight on FOX. However, for some, a championship will only suffice for the squad and while Wambach isn't a fan of the surface on which they're competing, she is enjoying the new-found popularity from the 2011 World Cup In Germany.
"But now that more people are involved in the beginning part of the tournament they want to analyze and hyper analyze and break things down which for me, I'm all about. I love the game, I love reading what everyone has to say. I don't think that everybody's right in everything they say but the reality is, we're talking about the game. We're growing the game and those are really good conversations to be had." -Wambach
FIFA 16 Is Coming And It Looks Amazing
EA Sports was a big part of Monday’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, and during their presentation they displayed an official trailer for FIFA 16. While one of game’s big features is the addition of 12 women’s national teams, a pleasant surprise for American fans came around the 21-second mark. After years of generic stadiums for MLS teams, it appears those in the states will get at least one authentic field, as a stadium that looked a lot like the Seattle Sounders’ CenturyLink Field is shown in the trailer. No word on if more MLS stadiums will make this year’s game, but fans will find out Sept. 22 on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
That's all we've got for you today, folks. Enjoy your Tuesday.
