Orlando City vs. New York Red Bulls: Five Takeaways

It feels like every week we find ourselves back in this same position, talking about the same things, and the same results. On Saturday night, the referees were the headline again, after Cyle Larin was sent off with a straight red card in the 32nd minute, putting the Lions on 10-men for the third consecutive match, and the sixth time this season.

Adrian Heath showed his frustration for the referees after the match, likely adding to the fine he’ll almost certainly be handed following his ejection from Orlando City’s 2-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls.

Heath had plenty of reasons to complain, as his team played well, but in the end, couldn't pull out even a single point, largely in part to the questionable officiating on the night.

PRO Puts the "Pro" in Profoundly Bad

For the (Major League Soccer leading?) sixth time this season, Orlando City was forced to play a man down when Cyle Larin was sent off in the 32nd minute on a straight red card for a foul that hardly even warranted being called a foul, at that. It looked like the call was made by the fourth official, Ted Unkel, who has been infamous around the league this season, especially after awarding four penalties in the Toronto FC-NYCFC game last weekend. MLS refereeing has been bad this season, and Orlando City continues to get screwed more often than not.

Corey Ashe Has Solid Debut for Orlando City

Acquired from the Houston Dynamo on Tuesday, Corey Ashe made his debut for Orlando City on Saturday night, and played quite for the Lions in their 2-0 loss. He looked a little nervous early on as he tried to make an impression on his new teammates, but the 5-foot-5 left back settled in nicely as the game grew on, holding down the spot well in Luke Boden’s absence.

"Corey did special," Heath said after the match. "Considering he's not been playing a lot of football of late, he did great. I think he'll fit in very well with us moving forward."

Carlos Rivas Effective Again

It looks like Orlando City has found its new free-kick taker in Carlos Rivas. The 21-year-old, after hitting a superb free-kick against West Bromwich on Wednesday, nearly knocked in two more from distance on Saturday night, making Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles sweat more than just a few times on the night. Rivas took seven shots on all, putting three on frame and the rest in Robles’ range. Rivas again used his speed as a weapon, but in the end couldn’t generate a goal for his club.

Everybody: Shots, Shots, Shots, Shots, Shots, Shots

Orlando City may have played like the better squad for a large portion of the match, but their biggest problem, as it was early in the season, was finishing off their chances in the final third. The team attempted 22 crosses on the night into the penalty area and completed just three of them. And as for total shots, the team took 14 of them, putting just six on frame at Robles. Finishing their chances wasn't the only reason the Lions were shut out, but it was certainly the biggest.

Orlando Loves It Some Adrian Heath

After displaying love for their head coach before the match with a tifo that also included team President Phil Rawlins and owner Flavió Augusto da Silva, Orlando City fans showed support again for the Gaffer when he was sent off late in the match. Waving his arms to get the crowd fired up as he walked to the locker room, the Citrus Bowl erupted in response.
