Kaká Named Captain for 2015 AT&T MLS All-Star Game

The fans of Major League Soccer have spoken, and the supporters have chosen Orlando City star Kaká to captain the league’s best and brightest in the 2015 AT&T MLS All-Star Game in Denver on July 29.

In a sign of the times, MLS chose to let fans cast their vote using Snapchat. As per the process, supporters followed MLS on Snapchat and viewed its story, which featured illustrations of the three players nominated to wear the armband against Tottenham Hotspur at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park – Kaká, Michael Bradley and Robbie Keane.

To cast their vote, fans took a screenshot of their preferred candidate and were encouraged to tweet the picture using the hashtag #MLSAllStar. Voting was open for 24 hours and, when the ballots were tallied, Orlando's Brazilian playmaker emerged as the people's choice to captain the MLS All-Stars over Bradley and Keane, respectively.

The three candidates were nominated by Pablo Mastroeni, who will coach the MLS All-Star squad next week. All three players represent veteran leaders who have starred in European leagues in the past such as the English Premier League and the Italian Serie A, and are now showcasing their greatness in the American top flight.

Kaká has been an instant success in the City Beautiful since signing as the club's first Designated Player last summer. Appearing in 19 of City's 20 MLS matches so far this season in the No. 10 role, Ricky has scored nine goals for the Lions – the fifth-highest tally in the league – while chipping in a pair of assists.

The 33-year-old former Ballon d’Or winner also added a goal in U.S. Open Cup competition and had a brilliant right-footed score in a friendly against West Bromwich Albion last week to improve his mark to 11 goals across all competitions.

Bradley, who has captained Toronto FC and is currently wearing the arm band for the United States Men’s National Team in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, has recorded a pair of goals and an assist in league play this season. Bradley – a versatile midfielder capable of playing centrally or in an attacking role – has missed five of TFC’s matches in 2015 due to international duty, but he has helped Toronto climb to third in the Eastern Conference alongside Jozy Altidore and fellow All-Star Sebastian Giovinco.

Keane has battled injury through much of the 2015 MLS season, but despite missing 10 games for the LA Galaxy the Irishman sits fourth in the league in scoring with nine goals. The forward has not only chipped in by scoring, but he’s complemented those goals with four assists and currently has LA in third place in the Supporters Shield standings behind only FC Dallas and D.C. United.
