Orlando City has acquired former Real Madrid defender David Mateos and Swiss Super League midfielder Adrian Winter, the team announced in a press release today.

The deal is pending the completion of the duo receiving their visas, but both are expected to join the team “in the coming weeks.” No other details about the signing were released.

Mateos, 28, had been rumored as a player Orlando City was looking to acquire in recent days and the fact that Orlando City completed the deal does not come as a surprise. He spent nearly seven years working his way through the Real Madrid system, where he got experience playing alongside Orlando City captain Kaká, entering the club’s system at age 12. However, Mateos was never able to quite catch on as a regular with the first team squad, although he made the team’s 18 a number of times.

Mateos is a big body at 6-foot-3, who will be able to hold his own against the bigger forwards in the league. He has played in Hungary with Ferencvárosi TC since 2013, helping that club qualify for the Europa League.

Winter is a 29-year-old attacking midfielder, who had more than 200 appearances in the Super Swiss League. Primarily a right wing, Winter fills the club’s glaring need since Kevin Molino’s season-ending injury. He made his national team debut with the Swiss squad in 2012, and has made 130 appearances with his Swiss team Luzern since 2011.

“We are delighted to have David and Adrian join our Club,” said General Manager Paul McDonough in a club press release. “Both are well-versed players who will strengthen our back line and attacking third. We believe they’re solid additions to our club, who will make an impact right away.”

With these moves, it seems that Orlando City has addressed two of its biggest needs, adding a strong defender who can play center back next to Aurelien Collin, and a midfielder who can play down the right side of Kaká. Neither signing is as flashy as the potential Chicharito or Ganso signings that Orlando City had been rumored to be trying to complete in recent weeks, but these moves add to the team’s depth and fill a positional need.

Oh, and the transfer window is still open.

Brief highlights for both players are found below. Based on the available YouTube clips, Mateos is quite the penalty taker.
