Lion Links: 8/26/15

Well, guys. I don’t know if this rock bottom. But Orlando City lost to its USL affiliate last night and the Lions officially have not won a game since they were fighting gladiators in the coliseum. Anyway, we’ve got a decent slate of links for you today. Check ’em out.

Orlando City Falls to Louisville City FC

Sure, it's a friendly. In August. And Orlando City didn't start most of its top players. But, it was an MLS squad on the ropes playing against a USL team and Orlando City, for lack of a better phrase, screwed the pooch, losing 3-1 to Louisville City FC.

Danny Mwanga scored the lone goal for the Lions. Matt Fondy, Juan Guzman and Charlie Adams each scored a goal for LCFC.

Late-August friendly or not. Orlando City needed to be better.

USWNT Pre-sale Starts Saturday

Orlando City announced Tuesday that the pre-sale for season ticket holders for the USWNT vs Brazil game in Orlando will start Saturday.

The sale will start at 10 a.m. and last until Tuesday at 8 a.m.

So, be on the lookout for those.

Klinsmann Having a Hard Time Getting Players Released

With just over a month until Olympic qualifying begins, no one is sure what the U.S. roster is going to look like. It turns out Jurgen Klinsmann is having trouble getting players released from their clubs for the matches.

Klinsmann said:

"We need help from the clubs overseas, we need help from the clubs here in MLS, in order to get the players released, especially [since] the Olympic qualifiers start outside of the release dates, so we badly need those players in order to qualify for Rio de Janeiro. Hopefully we get the support by all the clubs to get the players in."

It's a little concerning that Klinsmann is having trouble getting clubs to allow players to join the national squads for Olympic qualifying. I mean, if you can't play for your country, who can you play for?

Van Hollebeke Retires

Rachel Van Hollebeke, formerly known on the USWNT gold medal-winning 2008 and 2012 teams as Rachel Buehler, announced her retirement from both club and country play on Tuesday to attend medical school.

"I’m sad to be leaving the game because I love soccer," she said in a U.S. Soccer release announcing her retirement. "But it’s also been a passion of mine for a long time to attend medical school, and this is the right time to start that journey. Soccer has been a huge part of my life but I am so excited for this next step. I feel ready. I felt a shift this year and it was the right time to begin this part of my life."

It's nice to see that Van Hollebeke is using post-soccer life to go back to school and continue bettering herself. It's a shame that Van Hollebeke played professional soccer at the highest level, and yet she will have a more financially beneficial life after medical school than she did in sports. Shows us just how far behind women's sports are behind men's.

Van Hollebeke is just the latest USWNT player to retire, joining Shannon Boxx, Lauren Holiday and Lori Chalupny.
