Orlando City vs. Real Salt Lake Was the Fifth-Highest Attended Soccer Match in the World Over the Weekend

Coming into yesterday’s game, Orlando City was knowingly going to host the highest-attended match on Major League Soccer’s opening weekend if the Lions were able to #FillTheBowlAgain for their season-opening clash with Real Salt Lake. After packing 60,147 fans into the Citrus Bowl to witness an incredible comeback from the Lions, they set that attendance mark easily, beating out the crowd in Seattle by over 20,000.

If that weren't enough of a feat on its own, news came out from socceramerica.com that Orlando's match against RSL was the fifth-highest attended soccer match in the entire world over the weekend.

The match attendance beat out the Manchester City-Aston Villa game in Manchester, England, and the Monterrey-Tigres match in Mexico. The only games with higher attendance figures than Orlando from March 4-6 were Borussia Dortmund-Bayern Munich (81,359), Real Madrid-Celta in Madrid (68,467), Club América-Morelia in the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City (67,420), and the River Plate-Boca Juniors match in Argentina (63,578).

The attendance numbers were also fairly good for MLS as a whole: America's top-flight league was the sixth-highest attended league this past weekend with an average attendance of 26,152. This was ahead of France's League 1, Italy's Serie A and the Dutch Eredivisie. MLS fell only about 700 shy of passing Spain's La Liga as well.

So, overall, yesterday was a pretty good day for Orlando City fans.
