Orlando City Players to Watch During the International Break
While Orlando City has played only three games, it’s already time to hit pause on the 2016 MLS season for the first international break of the year. Three Orlando City stars have departed Central Florida to represent their countries in World Cup qualifying matches, giving supporters a chance to watch these players compete on the biggest stage in soccer. We’ve got everything you need to know to keep track of Cyle Larin, Darwin Ceren and Kevin Molino during the international break.
Cyle Larin
National Team: Canda
Matches:
- vs. Mexico 3/25
- at Mexico 3/29
Larin might just be Canada's most promising young footballer in a generation, and he's already allowed fans of Les Rouges to dream about the country's first World Cup appearance since 1986. Canada currently sits in position to advance from the group stage of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, after a massive 1-0 victory over Honduras and a road point against El Salvador, but this week will go a long way towards punching the Canadians' ticket to the Hex.
Home and away games against Group A favorite Mexico give Canada the chance to distance themselves from the other countries in their group, as Larin is expected to play a huge role in both games. He previously paired with Tosaint Ricketts in the Canadian attack and scored the winner against Honduras, though "scored" might be overstating it. Take a look:
Considering the country's World Cup hopes rest squarely upon Larin's right boot, Canada could be a fun team for Orlando City fans to follow through qualifying this year.
Darwin Ceren
National Team: El Salvador
Matches:
- vs. Honduras 3/25
- @ Honduras 3/29
Another CONCACAF nation trying to break a decades-long World Cup drought, El Salvador's hopes of qualifying for Russia are a little more perilous. After being rolled by Mexico 3-0 at Estadio Azteca and settling for a home point against Canada, La Selecta will need to make up some ground against Honduras.
They'll have a shot with Darwin Ceren anchoring the midfield, as the reigning MLS Latino Player of Year is arguably the best player on the squad. At least he's the only national team member currently playing in MLS.
He's already opened his 2018 WCQ account with a goal against Saint Kitts and Nevis, scoring a cheeky one timer off a corner kick.
If El Salvador can't pick up at least one victory against Honduras, the nation's World Cup hopes are basically done, so look for Ceren to be a potential difference-maker this week.
Kevin Molino
National Team: Trinidad and Tobago
Matches:
- @ St. Vincent and the Grenadines 3/25
- vs. St. Vincent and the Grenadines 3/29
Trinidad and Tobago is the smallest nation to ever qualify for the World Cup, doing so for the first and only time in 2006. They have a decent shot to reach at least the Hex this season, playing in a group that will pretty much come down to whoever drops points against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Molino's 12 international goals are second only to former Sunderland, Stoke City, and Bournemouth striker Kenwyne Jones on T&T's active roster. He'll be expected to add to that total in what should be two lopsided matches this week.
