Transfer Rumors: Orlando City Preparing To Sign Irish Defender Gavin Gunning

This town ain’t big enough for the two of us, Gavin.

Orlando City is reportedly set to offer a contract to Irish defender Gavin Gunning, according to Scottish new sites. Gunner, says the Evening Telegraph, recently returned to the UK after a week-long trial with the Lions. The site reports that Orlando City is prepared to sign him when he contract runs with Dundee United in June.

Gunning recently departed from Dundee United after an incident in a match against Iverness earlier this month.

As you can see in the video below, Gunning picked up the ball in the middle of the match and walked off the field. After he was ordered back onto the field by his manager, he hit the ground as if he were hurt. He was subbed off moments later, and was announced days later as leaving the club by mutual consent.

Assuming this rumor is actually something, the timing would make sense with Orlando City officially trading away Aurelien Collin this morning, leaving the Lions short on center backs at the moment. So, if anything, Gunning would provide some more depth at a thin area of the roster.

Gunning has spent the past season with Dundee United, and was under contract at Blackburn Rovers for three years from 2008-2011 when they were in the Premier League, however, he spent all of that contract on loan with four other clubs, so the history’s not great for the 25-year-old. But he has been in Ireland’s national picture, playing for both the U-19 and U-21 teams in the past and has more than 100 appearances in the Scottish Premiership.

We’ll continue to follow this story as it develops.
