Orlando Pride Signs Brazilian Midfielder Leah Fortune to Occupy Final Roster Spot
Today it was announced that the Orlando Pride has agreed to terms with midfielder Leah Fortune. In accordance with league and team rules, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Orlando Pride Coach Tom Sermanni had the following to say:
"We are delighted to have signed Leah. She came into preseason well-prepared, and her work ethic and professionalism have been evident from day one … With her ability to play effectively at numerous positions, Leah is going to add even greater flexibility to our squad."
Fortune was born in Brazil to American parents, but is cap-tied to Brazil having been called up to the side in 2010 and accumulating six caps for the national team since. Fortune is known for her "flip throw" that acts a bit more like a corner.
Fortune played collegiate soccer at the University of Texas between 2009 and 2010, then transferred to Lee University in Tennessee, where she was named a team captain and earned first-team All-American honors. Last year, Fortune played in the W-League where she led the league in assists and was second in both goals and points.
As a dual citizen, Fortune won't occupy an international slot on the Pride's roster.
