USA vs. Bolivia International Friendly: Final Score 4-0 Yanks as Pulisic Scores First USMNT Goal
The U.S. Men’s National Team will roll into next week’s Copa America Centenario on the heels of a 4-0 beatdown of Bolivia Saturday night that saw Gyasi Zardes bag a brace and 17-year-old Christian Pulisic score his first for the U.S. Brad Guzan went the distance and kept a clean sheet for the Americans.
Unlike the match on Wednesday, the Yanks did not wait until the dying moments of the match to get the offense going. In the 26th minute, Alejandro Bedoya played a perfect first-time ball over the top of the Bolivian back line that sprung Zardes down the middle. And the LA Galaxy man did not waste his chance, slotting home from just outside the 18, under onrushing Bolivian keeper Guillermo Viscarra .
And 11 minutes later, the Stars and Stripes had doubled their lead. Captain Michael Bradley took a free kick from 30 yards out quickly and found Bedoya open on the end line. The Nantes man hit a sliding cross to the top of the six-yard box and found John Brooks, who finished calmly with his left foot for his third U.S. goal to make it 2-0.
Speaking of Brooks, he and Stoke City man Geoff Cameron got the starts at center back and seem to be the likely pairing for the U.S.'s Copa opener next week.
Zardes completed his brace in the 52nd minute. Bobby Wood chested down a cross on the end line and drove a cross of his own across the six-yard box that found the foot of a sliding Zardes, who made it 3-0.
But the biggest story of the match might have come in the 69th minute. Just six minutes after being subbed on with Darlington Nagbe, the latter laid off a ball for Pulisic, who slotted a ball into the right corner from just inside the top of the box. It was the first goal for the Borussia Dortmund product in a U.S. shirt, and will surely boost his chances of playing time in the Copa.
That's it, no more friendlies. It's all business from here. Up next, the Yanks travel to Santa Clara, CA, to take on Colombia on Friday to kick of their Copa America run.
