Orlando City SC Stock Watch: A Carlos Rivas Sighting; Brek Shea in Form

We come into this edition of the stock watch off a roller coaster week that saw our Orlando City Lions take out the Montreal Impact 4-1 before falling to the Los Angeles Galaxy by way of a brutal 4-2 score. It’s time to take all 180+ minutes of soccer into account to see who finds their stock rising and falling.

Rising

Carlos Rivas – Rivas was an absolute monster against Montreal. While he was largely invisible in the 30 minutes he played played against the Galaxy, he looked like a different human being than we’ve seen before against the Impact. His play as a striker was top class, scoring once and registering two assists en route to completing 80% of his passes.

While he seemed to take two steps forward against Montreal, he did take a step back against the Galaxy. When you're climbing the stairs from the cellar, that qualifies as rising stock.

Brek Shea – Brek’s back. In the immediate aftermath of Jason Kreis’ arrival, Brek looked energized by the move up the pitch before quickly falling into a funk that he has pulled himself out of with goals in both games this week. He was the best Lion in the air against Montreal, and created a chance on top of the early goal he scored as a starter.

Coming on as a sub against the Galaxy, he managed to score a goal late to make it a less embarrassing 4-2 defeat.

Falling

David Mateos – After seeing a slight uptick, Mateos has come back to earth with a rough week. Managing just one tackle in two matches, I thought it was clear José Aja was the better man on the back line. David whiffed at a chance at redemption when a Kevin Molino corner kick to his face managed to escape the fate it seemed destined for when he failed to put it on target.

Kevin Alston – This position has been a nightmare this season. He seemed to remember he was a professional soccer player against Montreal, but was found looking for the hot dog vendor in Los Angeles when the Galaxy broke the ice.

Isn’t it weird to be excited about Rafael Ramos‘ return, given his play earlier this season? That’s the kind of year we’ve seen at right back.
