USA vs. Germany, SheBelieves Cup: How to Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Preview, Lineups, Match Thread and More
The United States Women’s National Team will face Germany in a marquee match-up between two of the world’s best teams. This will be the first meeting between the two since last year’s edition of the SheBelieves Cup, in which the USWNT won 2-1 to claim the title.
Most recently, Germany has had more of the success between the two sides. The European giants won gold at the Rio Olympics, as the U.S. was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Germany
One of the major story lines coming into the tournament for Germany is how its new manager, Steffi Jones, will do. The jury is still out on her performance as new manager, and this will be a good test for her early on.
As for the German team itself, the roster chosen for the tournament features multiple prolific goal scorers. Two of those players are the dynamic duo of Alexandra Popp and Dzsenifer Marozsan, who have both scored over 30 goals in their young careers with the senior team. Veteran striker Anja Mittag is also on the team sheet, and she has netted 49 goals in 149 senior appearances for Germany.
One area to which the German team is trying to find some answers before the UEFA Women’s competition this summer is goalkeeping. The retirement of longtime starter Nadine Angerer has left a void in net and the German team features three goalkeepers on its roster that are looking for playing time. Almuth Schult looks to be the No. 1 in net, but Laura Benkarth and Lisa Weiß should also see playing time.
United States of America
It will be a mix of young and old players for the USWNT. There are 12 players with 20 caps or less, and four players with over 100 caps. Veterans such as Carli Lloyd, Tobin Heath, and Alex Morgan will be instrumental in the team’s success. Morgan had an impressive run of form in this competition last year, and she scored against Germany in the final match.
Much like Germany, goalkeeping will be an interesting part of the U.S. roster to watch. There are three keepers on the roster and the starter on Wednesday is still up in the air. Ashlyn Harris and Alyssa Naeher started the last two games of 2016 for the USWNT, respectively, and Jane Campbell was just named to her first ever senior team game roster.
Up top, Christen Press will look to continue her good run of form — the striker has scored in five of her last six appearances for the USWNT. Midfielder Morgan Brian also had a solid finish to 2016, scoring in the final two games.
The USWNT has not lost to Germany since 2003, and the record stands at 8-0-5 in the last 13 meetings in favor of the U.S. The two countries combined have won 10 of the 13 Women’s World Cup titles.
Three Orlando Pride players are on the roster: Ashlyn Harris, Ali Krieger, and Alex Morgan all made the cut, and all three should be seen in this match.
