USWNT vs. England, SheBelieves Cup: Final Score 1-0 as U.S. Falls on Late Goal

In dramatic fashion, England claimed a famous victory against the United States Women’s National Team at Red Bull Arena in the dying minutes of the match on Day 2 of the SheBelieves Cup. For just the second time, the English were able to defeat the U.S. in their 14-match history. It was the first time on American soil.

The match-winner was scored in 89th minute after an initial shot by Lucy Bronze hit the crossbar, there was a mad scramble for it that followed in the box, and White was there to pounce on it to make it 1-0. The winner was set up by an unnecessary corner kick conceded by the U.S. after Christen Press failed to clear a previous corner, turning it over in her own defensive third.

It wasn’t a performance to remember by any means for the USWNT, as the Yanks lacked scoring prowess and wasted several opportunities. However, there was improvement in the midfield., including a fine performance from Lindsey Horan. In total, there were seven changes made from Wednesday’s match against Germany.

In the first half, both sides had opportunities to go in front. The first chance came in the 24th minute, when Rose Lavelle — in her first U.S. cap — was denied on the doorstep by Siobhan Chamberlain. The English goalkeeper made a spectacular save from point blank range to keep it scoreless.

England saw its best chance of the first half come in the 32nd minute as a floated ball into the box reached Nikita Parris, who was denied by Orlando Pride goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris.

In the second half, the Americans were on the attack throughout, but failed to break down the England back line. White’s goal came off of a corner kick that was cleared only as far as Bronze, who was unlucky not to score on a blast off the woodwork, and then two U.S defenders collided, which allowed White to easily score. No real chances came in stoppage time and it finished 1-0.

This was the first clean sheet England has recorded against the USWNT since 1988.

All three of the Pride players on the USWNT roster started the match. Alex Morgan played 63 minutes up front and was replaced by Press. Ali Kreiger played the entire match on the back line, while Harris made two saves between the pipes.

Up next, the USWNT will play France on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The French drew against Germany in a scoreless match. This will be a must-win if the U.S. hopes to repeat as Champion of the SheBelieves Cup.
