The 2017 FIFA Under-20 World Cup group stage has come and gone, and now the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team faces New Zealand in the round of 16.

New Zealand went 1-1-1 in Group E, earning second place behind France. Forward Myer Bevan scored all but one of New Zealand’s goals so far, and the Kiwis are coming off a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the French.

The U.S. won Group F, going 1-0-2 and earning five points. The young Nats’ defense was praised before the tournament, but thanks to Joshua Sargent and Luca De La Torre, it has been the attack that the opposition fears.

The Americans will be without three starters after “poor refereeing” against Saudi Arabia. Defenders Cameron Carter-Vickers and Aaron Herrera, and midfielder Derrick Jones will all be suspended for the elimination game.

While this is obviously disappointing for the team, it may give Orlando City defender Tommy Redding another chance to start. Redding played in the U.S.’s 3-3 opening draw against Ecuador, but has yet to see the field since. With the injury to Arsenal’s Gedion Zelalem, Erik Palmer-Brown will most likely move up into the midfield, where he played in qualifiers. Justen Glad, Auston Trusty, and Redding should fill in on the backline, with Danny Acosta remaining at left back. Redding or Trusty, both natural center backs, will slide over to right back, as there are no other right backs on the roster.

The winner of this match will play Venezuela at 2 a.m. ET on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

Match Thread Rules

This is your live thread for posting comments on the match. So use our comments section below to talk about the game in real time with other supporters. If you're new, welcome to our happy home! While you're here, please observe a few basic rules:

  • Absolutely no links to illegal streams. They can get us in trouble, and no one wants that.
  • Try not to be "that guy" who spews nothing but venom and hate for the team. It's OK to be critical, and, let's face it, sometimes even the best teams can be frustrating to watch, but being overly negative relentlessly can sap the enjoyment for others.
  • Keep it somewhat clean and fair when criticizing players / officials. You never know who might be reading.
  • Do unto others in the match thread, the way you would have others do unto you. We are a fun community and want to keep it this way. We have a moderator, but we'd rather let him enjoy the game instead of having to play babysitter.

Enjoy the match!
