USA vs. Mexico, World Cup Qualifier: How to Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Preview, Lineups, Match Thread, and More

The United States Men’s National Team looked underwhelming in Thursday’s match against Trinidad and Tobago, but then Christian Pulisic put his stamp on the game, to help the Yanks to a 2-0 win in Colorado.

Tonight, the USMNT faces an all-too-familiar threat — the Yanks must go into the Azteca as underdogs and hope to leave with at least one point. The U.S., sitting in third place in the Hex, take on the group leaders in the 87,000-seat stadium, 7,200 feet above sea level.

Although the U.S. has only ever gained five points from 11 games in the heart of Mexico, the last two visits resulted in four of them. The last time the U.S.-Mexico rivalry happened might have ended in bitter disappointment for the home side, and the eventual sacking of Jurgen Klinsmann, but the team now has a newfound belief under Bruce Arena, and “The Kid” has been simply unstoppable.

Clint Dempsey is still just one goal away from tying Landon Donovan’s all-time goal record, but the talk is all about Pulisic. Plus, with nothing to lose, Arena may decide to rest Dempsey altogether and instead go with Bobby Wood and Jozy Altidore up top.

The theme for the Americans will be energy if they are going to beat the Mexicans. This will most likely result in a slightly different lineup than against T&T. In addition to Dempsey sitting, Geoff Cameron could make way for Omar Gonzalez. Gonzalez is fully rested and plays in Liga MX, so he is more accustomed to the altitude than Cameron, who in addition to Altidore, Alejandro Bedoya, Matt Besler, Michael Bradley, and John Brooks, is one yellow card away from suspension.

Some good news for the U.S. is that Rafa Marquez, Andres Guardado, Miguel Layun, Nestor Araujo, and Jesus "Tecatito" Corona will all be unable to suit up for Mexico, which is coming off a 3-0 home win against Honduras.
