USA vs. Ireland, International Friendly: Preview, How To Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Lineups, Match Thread, and More

After coming off of a 3-0 domination against a young Bolivia team, the United States travels to Europe. Today the U.S. will take on Ireland in Dublin (3 p.m. ET, ESPN2) before traveling to France next week.

Against Bolivia the story going in was a young roster and the return of Christian Pulisic. While Pulisic was pretty quiet on the night, other youngsters showed their ability. Walker Zimmerman, Tim Weah, and Josh Sargent all scored their first international goals, as interim coach Dave Sarachan put a starting XI out with an average age of just 22.

Sarachan made a few changes to the roster after the Bolivia match. Pulisic was the big name that did not travel to Europe. After a long club season with Dortmund he will be getting some much-needed rest. Alex Bono, Alejandro Guido, Lynden Gooch, Ethan Horvath, Matt Olosunde, and Walker Zimmerman also were part of the squad last week but did not travel to Europe. Instead Zack Steffen and William Yarbrough, Shaq Moore, Tim Parker, DeAndre Yedlin, Tyler Adams, Luca de la Torre, Kenny Saief, Wil Trapp, and Bobby Wood have all been called up on a new 25-man roster.

“We’re excited about the chance to add some of the veterans from Europe as well as the younger guys in MLS who have been part of our group since November,” Sarachan said. “The games against Ireland and France will bring increasingly more difficult challenges, so we felt it was important to bring in some players that offer a bit more experience. These matches will provide another big development opportunity for these players who are growing in their international careers.”

The U.S. has struggled against Ireland. The Irish have the advantage with a record of 5-2-2, and won the last two matches. The last time that the Yanks beat Ireland was back in 1996, when the team featured Brad Friedel, Tab Ramos, Claudio Reyna, Alexi Lalas, and Cobi Jones. The U.S. won 2-0 in Foxborough on goals from Ramos and Reyna.

The last times these two teams met Mix Diskerud scored the lone goal for the Americans in a 4-1 match. Bill Hamid, Bobby Wood, Rubio Rubin, and Julian Green are the only carryover players from that game back in 2014 and Green did not even see the field.

For Ireland, John O’Shea will play in his last ever game for the Boys in Green as he is retiring after 118 international caps.
