USA vs. Brazil, International Friendly: Preview, How To Watch, Live Stream, Match Thread, and More

Welcome to your match thread as the United States Men’s National Team takes on Brazil in the first of five scheduled friendlies from now through November. The Yanks take on Brazil as Interim Head Coach Dave Sarachan continues to test the new generation of Americans.

Christian Pulisic and Josh Saragent both did not get call-ups. Pulisic is currently nursing a muscle injury and Sargent is working on breaking into the Werder Bremen first team after scoring five goals in seven matches with the Under-23 squad.

Even without these youngsters, Sarachan has managed to call in an extremely young team. The average age is just 23 years old but there are still veterans in the mix. DeAndre Yedlin (52 caps), Bobby Wood (39), Gyasi Zardes (37) and John Brooks (33) have the most appearances, while New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long could make his first.

With so many young and inexperienced players, it will be tough to take down a Brazil roster headlined with the attacking power of Neymar, and with then-record signing goalkeeper Alisson in net. This 24-player roster consists of 13 players that were part of the World Cup team that went to this year’s quarterfinal. This is Brazil’s first match since that 2-1 loss to Belgium.

The U.S. has struggled in the all-time series, winning just once for a dismal record of 1-17-0. The sole win came back in the 1998 Gold Cup semifinal, with the U.S. captained by John Harkes. In that game, Kasey Keller had a shutout and Preki scored the game-winner five minutes after being brought on in the eventual 1-0 win. Brazil has won 10 straight against the Yanks since then and will look to make it 11 tonight.

This young American side might have something to say about that, though. It is true that only 11 players have more than five caps, but about half of the team played in the Yanks’ 1-1 draw with France — which went undefeated since May and won the World Cup a month later. Of those 12 Americans — Tyler Adams, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Julian Green, Weston McKennie, Matt Miazga, Shaq Moore, Tim Parker, Antonee Robinson, Zack Steffen, Wil Trapp, Bobby Wood, and DeAndre Yedlin — all started except Yedlin, who came on for Moore in the second half.

The last time that the U.S. played Brazil it ended in a 4-1 defeat for the Yanks. Nine players from both teams are on tonight’s rosters — Wood, Yedlin, and Zardes for the U.S., as well as Brazil’s Neymar, Fabinho, Willian, Douglas Costa, and Roberto Firmino. Hulk got the match started with a ninth-minute goal, Neymar got a brace, and Rafinha scored a minute after coming on the field. U.S. midfielder Danny Williams got a consolation goal in the 90th minute.
