USA vs. Mexico, International Friendly: Preview, How To Watch, Live Stream, Lineups, Match Thread, and More

Welcome to your match thread as the United States Men’s National Team takes on Mexico in the second of the Yanks’ Kickoff Series matches. After losing to Brazil on Thursday, the U.S. looks to rebound against its arch rival.

Since that 2-0 defeat last week, two players — John Brooks and Paul Arriola — have left the international team to return to their respective clubs. Both Brooks and Arriola started against Brazil.

Mexico has dominated the all-time series, going 37-19-14 in 70 games. However, this is in large part due to the Mexicans going 22-1-3 in the first 26 matches. Since the turn of the century, the series has been much closer, with the U.S. going 13-7-6.

The last time these two teams played was just last year in a World Cup qualifier. Michael Bradley and Carlos Vela each scored in the first half hour and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Playing at the Azteca, this was a huge result for the Americans.

Mexico hasn’t lost in the past three matches agains the U.S., and the last time that it did was back in 2015. Nick Rimando held a clean sheet for the Yanks as Jordan Morris and Juan Agudelo scored in the second half for another famous 2-0 result. Julian Green, Gyasi Zardes, and DeAndre Yedlin are the only Americans on that team to be called up this time around, on a squad that featured then-Orlando City Lion Brek Shea.

Coming into the match, expect some changes from Interim Head Coach Dave Sarachan. He will most likely keep the 4-1-4-1 but he will make lineup changes to get everyone involved. A few of the players I expect will remain in the starting XI are captain Wil Trapp, Zack Steffen in net, and Yedlin at right back. Bobby Wood will most likely make way for Zardes, and expect Tim Weah to get more minutes than he did on Thursday.
