Lion Links
Lion Links: 10/7/18
Merry Sunday morning, Mane Landers. I know it’s not my usual morning, but it is so very nice to join you on a Sunday morning. Sure, the Lions lost to FC Dallas, but to be clear, on the PawedCast Michael and I called the fact that we were going to lose that match, so if you are upset, you only have yourself to blame. Michael and I on the other hand will be blaming ourselves, thank you very much. Let’s get to the Links!
Orlando City Blanked Again
Well, that rain delay sucked, but to be fair, so did the result. Play good for a little, give up a couple of goals. and then not be able to come back? We should be used to such games at this point, and given that there are no playoffs for the Lions, frankly we should be relieved. I’m not actually surprised, to be truthful. Disappointed, certainly, but I’m like many of you at this point, and I’lll save it for a time when it’s more appropriate.
- Sean Rollins has your match recap.
- The Bearded Guy has your player grades and Man of the Match.
- The view from the other side comes from Big D Soccer.
Guilherme Torres will have your five takeaways from the match a bit later this morning.
Orlando Pride Coaching Search Intensifies
If you were hoping to have a short list of candidates for the Pride’s new coach, you’re going to have to wait a bit. The Pride have pretty much kept the team and assistant coaches intact following the departure of Tom Sermanni. Given that there is still a longer list of replacement candidates, that’s a smart move. The new coach might like the assistants, or might want to keep any number of the current players. The organization has started interviewing potential coaches, and expects to narrow down the list by next week and potentially make a decision.
OCB Making Moves
Orlando City B might have just picked a new coach, but that doesn’t mean he has been too busy to work on the upcoming season. It’ quite a task, taking a team that sort of exists, but doesn’t really, and see how one can shape it. I think that we’ll know more as the off-season plays out, but stay tuned, because exciting times are ahead.
The Other Side of the 1999 Story
Briana Scurry was the goalkeeper for the USWNT when it won its first World Cup in 1999. Did you remember that? To be perfectly honest, I didn’t. I remember Brandi Chastain scoring the penalty kick to win the match. I remember her celebration. But I didn’t remember the fact that Briana made the save to win that match. I should have. I should have remembered that. It’s that important. Did the media focus on Chastain because she was white, or that she took off her jersey? Did they not make a big deal about Briana because she was black? I won’t go that far, but to be fair, we should remember the other part of that penalty kick win. Briana Scurry.
Free Kicks
- Weston McKennie scored his first goal in the Bundesliga. This came on the heels of his winner in UEFA Champions League against Lokomitiv Moscow. That’s right, a young USMNT player is scoring goals. Gotta love it.
A moment he'll never forget.

McKennie’s goal was not the only one scored by an American, since Geoff Cameron opened his account for QPR Saturday to equalize the contest.
- Orange County SC was hacked. Frankly, I’m surprised it hasn’t happened to everyone, at some point. Regardless, they are sorry.
DEAR FANS: Yesterday, our Twitter account was hacked. Thanks to the help of our friends w/ @MLS @USL @Twitter we were able to regain control of our account. We have taken steps to ensure that this doesn't happen again, and deeply appreciate your patience. #ForCounty #USL #MyOCSC

- Sure, Orlando City might be eliminated from the playoffs, but so are the defending MLS champions. So the Lions are in good company.
- Which Orlando City celebration from FIFA 19 is your favorite?
The TV27 crew wants your opinion. Which of the boys did it best celebrating in #FIFA19? #VamosOrlando

That’s going to do it for this special edition (in other words, I am done). We’ll see you next week!
