MLS Draft 2019: Lions Take Denver Defender Scott DeVoss

Orlando City used its third round selection in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft on defender Scott DeVoss from the University of Denver. The 6-foot-1 Coloradan is the second center back the Lions took in the draft.

Growing up in Centennial, Colorado, DeVoss spent his youth career with the Real Colorado Development Academy. After three seasons in the academy and finishing his youth career as captain, DeVoss chose to attend the University of Denver.

DeVoss redshirted his freshman year before quickly becoming a key member of the Pioneers, starting 19 games his redshirt freshman year. He would remain a key member of the starting lineup for the remainder of his collegiate career, starting 24 games in 2016, 19 games in 2017, and 21 games in 2018. In total, DeVoss started 83 games for Denver, recording six goals and one assist in 7,680 minutes.

DeVoss’ time in Denver saw him set multiple school records in starts and appearances. His 83 appearances equaled a school record with Andre Shinyashiki and Sam Hamilton while his 83 starts put him alone as the school’s division one leader. While anchoring the Pioneer defense, Denver had a 61-12-10 record, placing them fifth in the country in wins over that period. Additionally, they had the second-highest points-won rate in the country at 77.5 percent.

DeVoss won a number of Summit League awards during his collegiate career. He was named to the All-Summit League Newcomer Team, All-Summit League Second Team, and Most Improved Player in 2015. A year later, he was named to the Summit League Second Team and Summit League All-Tournament Team. In both his junior and senior seasons, he was named to the Summit League First Team and was the Summit League Tournament MVP in 2018.

During the summer, DeVoss played for Colorado Rapids U-23s of the Premier Development League. In 2017, he took part in 11 games, recording 900 minutes and three shots while being sent off once. This past summer he returned to the team making one appearance. During the 2017 PDL season, he was named to the All-Western Conference Team and PDL All-League Team.
