USA vs. Chile, International Friendly: Preview, How to Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Lineups, and Match Thread

Welcome to your live thread as the United States Men’s National Team takes on Chile at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. The Yanks are coming off a 1-0 win against Ecuador, and are undefeated in 2019.

Gregg Berhalter still has a perfect record in his international coaching career and could make history tonight. Berhalter tied Bob Bradley as the only coaches to win their first three matches in charge of the USMNT and could set a new record tonight. The U.S. also has had three straight shutouts. If the Yanks manage a shutout, then Bradley would tie Alkis Panagoulias’ four consecutive shutouts to start his career back in 1983-84.

Tonight’s game should the toughest test for Berhalter, though. The former Crew coach has said that he will make a number of changes to his lineup that barely got by Ecuador. The Yanks scraped by with a dull, 1-0 win. The lone goal, which came from Gyasi Zardes, was a fluke, but they all count the same, and the U.S. still managed the win.

Tyler Adams will not be available, as he has returned to Red Bull Leipzig. Weston McKennie also is unavailable, as he suffered a moderate to high-degree ankle sprain and returned to Schalke. McKennie is expected to be out the rest of the Bundesliga season.

DeAndre Yedlin came in off the bench last week and will likely start tonight. Expect Christian Pulisic to also start. Zardes will probably feature again, albeit coming off the bench. Last week, Berhalter went with a back four of Adams, John Brooks, Aaron Long, and Tim Ream, with Sean Johnson in net. Johnson will almost certainly sit the bench, while Omar Gonzalez and Matt Miazga are likely to get the starts.

Chile beat Mexico 3-1 on Friday and is the best team that the Yanks have faced this calendar year. Raul Rueda’s side has a mixture of veteran and youth. Defenders Mauricio Isla, Gonzalo Jara, and Gary Medel, and midfielder Arturo Vidal all have over 100 caps. However, the rest of the 24-man roster has a total of just 256 caps, including 13 players with fewer than 10.

La Roja holds a slight advantage in the all-time series. The U.S. has a record of just 3-4-2 against Chile, with the last win coming back in 2000. All three of those wins finished with a 2-1 scoreline.

The last time that these two teams faced each other was back in January 2015. Brek Shea scored in the sixth minute, only for Roberto Gutierrez to equalize it four minutes later. Jozy Altidore gave the Americans the lead again just before halftime, but a second-half brace from Mark Gonzalez gave Chile the 3-2 victory. Current national team players Yedlin, Michael Bradley, and Wil Trapp featured in that game, while Johnson and Zardes were unused subs. Orlando City’s Shane O’Neill was also on the bench in the match.

  • Absolutely no links to illegal streams. They can get us in trouble, and no one wants that.
  • Try not to be the person who spews nothing but venom and hate for the team. It’s OK to be critical, and, let’s face it, sometimes even the best teams can be frustrating to watch, but being overly negative relentlessly can sap the enjoyment for others.
  • Keep it somewhat clean and fair when criticizing players / officials. You never know who might be reading.
  • Do unto others in the match thread, the way you would have others do unto you. We are a fun community and want to keep it this way. We have a moderator, but we’d rather let him enjoy the game instead of having to play babysitter.

Enjoy the match! Go America!
