Welcome to your live thread for the United States Men’s National Team’s opening match of the 2019 Gold Cup against Guyana. The game is at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, MN (10 p.m., FS1) — the first-ever USMNT match in the North Star State. This is also the first time that the U.S. will face Guyana. The Golden Jaguars are the 98th different country that the Yanks have played.

Guyana is a South American country, and this is the first time that the Golden Jaguars are in the Gold Cup. The country gained independence in 1966 and joined FIFA in 1970. Guyana is translated to “land of water,” given to the country by the natives before colonization and is the only English-speaking country in South America. It is one of three South American countries in Concacaf, along with Suriname and French Guiana.

This is the 15th Concacaf Gold Cup, which is held every two years. The first tournament was held in 1991 and was hosted by the United States. Since then, the U.S. has hosted or co-hosted every tournament. Historically, the U.S. or Mexico has dominated, and one of these two North American nations have won it every time except 2000, when Canada beat Colombia.

The Yanks have won it six times and are the current reigning champions, while Mexico has seven titles. Landon Donovan holds the all-time record for most goals scored in the Gold Cup, with 19. The former U.S. international also has appeared in the most Gold Cup games.

Tonight will be the first time that USMNT Head Coach Gregg Berhalter coaches at the Gold Cup. The former Columbus Crew head coach will look to have the Yanks repeat as champions for the first time in USMNT history. The Americans are coming off two embarrassing losses — 1-0 to Jamaica and 3-0 to Venezuela — and will need to improve immediately. Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore should play key parts in Berhalter’s plans, as well as younger players like Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic.

Match Thread Rules

This is your live thread for posting comments on the match. So use our comments section below to talk about the game in real time with other supporters. If you’re new, welcome to our happy home! While you’re here, please observe a few basic rules:

  • Absolutely no links to illegal streams. They can get us in trouble, and no one wants that.
  • Try not to be the person who spews nothing but venom and hate for the team. It’s OK to be critical, and, let’s face it, sometimes even the best teams can be frustrating to watch, but being overly negative relentlessly can sap the enjoyment for others.
  • Keep it somewhat clean and fair when criticizing players / officials. You never know who might be reading.
  • Do unto others in the match thread, the way you would have others do unto you. We are a fun community and want to keep it this way. We have a moderator, but we’d rather let him enjoy the game instead of having to play babysitter.

Enjoy the match! Go America!
