Welcome to your match thread as the United States Men’s National Team takes on Uruguay at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, MO.

The Yanks and La Celeste are set for their seventh all-time match-up. The series is currently tied at 2-2-2.

This is the first time the teams have met since May 12, 2002. Tony Sanneh and then-17-year-old DaMarcus Beasley both scored in the first half as the U.S. went on to win 2-1 in front of 30,413 fans at RFK Stadium. Earnie Stewart, the current Sporting Director of U.S. Soccer, started the match for the Yanks. He made way for then-20-year-old Landon Donovan at the half.

The first time that the teams met was in the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. The U.S. lost 3-0 to Uruguay, but it was just the fourth-ever USMNT match.

The last time that the USMNT played at Busch Stadium was in 2015. The Yanks dominated St. Vincent and the Grenadines, 6-1 in front of 43,433 fans. A few months ago the U.S. Women’s National Team played there and beat New Zealand, 5-0. The 35,761 fans in attendance were good enough for the third-largest standalone domestic crowd in USWNT history.

The U.S. will be without a few key players tonight. John Brooks, Sean Johnson, Weston McKennie, Alfredo Morales, Christian Pulisic and Zack Steffen all left camp and returned to their respective club teams. Brooks and Morales were both injured, while McKennie, Pulisic and Steffen played the full 90 minutes against Mexico. Johnson did not dress, and was unlikely to dress tonight as well if Steffen had stayed in camp.

The USMNT is looking to end a two-match losing streak. Both losses came against Mexico. That ties the longest losing streak in Gregg Berhalter’s young tenure at helm. He lost against Jamaica and Venezuela before the Gold Cup.

Expect the U.S. to continue to attempt to build out from the back and play possession style. Berhalter has stuck with this philosophy since he took charge, and his team has struggled to adapt to it so far. The Yanks will likely struggle again tonight against a much better opponent in Uruguay.

Match Thread Rules

This is your live thread for posting comments on the match. So use our comments section below to talk about the game in real time with other supporters. If you’re new, welcome to our happy home! While you’re here, please observe a few basic rules:

  • Absolutely no links to illegal streams. They can get us in trouble, and no one wants that.
  • Try not to be the person who spews nothing but venom and hate for the team. It’s OK to be critical, and, let’s face it, sometimes even the best teams can be frustrating to watch, but being overly negative relentlessly can sap the enjoyment for others.
  • Keep it somewhat clean and fair when criticizing players and/or officials. You never know who might be reading.
  • Do unto others in the match thread, the way you would have others do unto you. We are a fun community and want to keep it this way. We have a moderator, but we’d rather let him enjoy the game instead of having to play babysitter.

Enjoy the match! Go America!
