USA vs. Canada, Nations League: Preview, How to Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Lineups, and Match Thread

Welcome to your live thread as the United States Men’s National Team takes on Canada in the Concacaf Nations League. The USMNT beat Cuba 7-0 last week in the Yanks’ first match of the tournament. Canada currently leads the group, after beating Cuba 6-0 in Canada and 1-0 in Cuba.

It is vital for the U.S. to grab a win tonight. First, it will move the Yanks into a first-place tie with Canada on points and ahead in the goal differential tiebreaker. The tiebreakers are, in order:

  • Total number of points
  • Goal differential
  • Goals scored
  • Greatest number of goals scored in away matches
  • Fair Play rankings
  • Drawing of lots

If the U.S. wins tonight, it would be in full control with Canada still having to travel to Orlando to finish out their group matches, while the U.S. still has a date with Cuba in addition to the second leg against the Canadians. More importantly though, a win tonight will automatically qualify the U.S. for the Gold Cup.

The U.S. is 14-8-11 all-time against Canada. However, the series is much closer in competitive matches and the Yanks are just 7-6-4. Games in Toronto are even worse, and Canada holds the advantage, 2-0-1.

The teams last met in February 2015. With Jürgen Klinsmann at the helm, the Yanks needed an 89th-minute Jozy Altidore header to seal the 1-0 win in Carson, CA. The last competitive match between the teams was back in June 2011. At Ford Field in Detroit, Altidore and Clint Dempsey each recorded a goal to lift the Yanks to a 2-0 Gold Cup group stage match win.

A few names should stick out to Orlando City fans. Former Lion Richie Laryea started in Canada’s last match, and played the full 90. Current Lions Tesho Akindele and Will Johnson have not been called up, but Kamal Miller is in the 21. Miller is not expected to play, though. Another player not on the roster is Cyle Larin.

Match Thread Rules

This is your live thread for posting comments on the match. So use our comments section below to talk about the game in real time with other supporters. If you’re new, welcome to our happy home! While you’re here, please observe a few basic rules:

  • Absolutely no links to illegal streams. They can get us in trouble, and no one wants that.
  • Try not to be the person who spews nothing but venom and hate for the team. It’s OK to be critical, and, let’s face it, sometimes even the best teams can be frustrating to watch, but being overly negative relentlessly can sap the enjoyment for others.
  • Keep it somewhat clean and fair when criticizing players and/or officials. You never know who might be reading.
  • Do unto others in the match thread, the way you would have others do unto you. We are a fun community and want to keep it this way. We have a moderator, but we’d rather let him enjoy the game instead of having to play babysitter.

Enjoy the match! Go America!
