2019 Orlando Pride Season in Review: Haley Kopmeyer

In Haley Kopmeyer’s second season with the Orlando Pride, she saw a lot more playing time, but couldn’t match her performance from 2018. Kopmeyer was originally acquired as a replacement backup for Ashlyn Harris when the Pride traded Aubrey Bledsoe to the Washington Spirit prior to the 2018 season. She only played in four matches in 2018, but was a standout performer for the Pride.

Statistical Breakdown

Kopmeyer played in 10 games, started all 10, and played all 900 minutes of those games in 2019. As expected, Kopmeyer was pressed into duty when Harris was away on international duty for the Women’s World Cup. She made 47 saves, saved 67% of the 70 shots faced, and allowed 23 goals. Kopmeyer recorded no clean sheets and held a record of 2-1-7 in 2019.

Best Game

Kopmeyer’s best game came in the Pride’s first win of the season — a 2-1 win against Sky Blue FC on June 22. She made four saves in that match against 22 shots, and five on target from Sky Blue. Additionally, the goal she gave up was a penalty kick in the 67th minute. However, it was her save in the 61st minute on Raquel Rodríguez that was key to securing the win for the Pride.

2019 Final Grade

Like most of the Pride in 2019, Kopmeyer didn’t have her best season. Still, she is one of the more experienced backup keepers in the league, and the Pride could have done much worse. The Mane Land staff gave her a final grade of 4 for the season. It was definitely not as good as her 2018 final grade of 7.5, but the entire team regressed in 2019. This has to be a disappointing season for Kopmeyer given how well she did in her limited time last season.

2020 Outlook

Kopmeyer is a good backup keeper who has the potential to be a starter, but she wasn’t able to prove it when she was given the extended opportunity this season. With all the other needs on this team, it’s unlikely that Marc Skinner will make any changes in goal and the Pride exercised the team’s option on her contract. Having Harris and Kopmeyer is about as good as it can get in the NWSL, even if Kopmeyer didn’t step it up this past season.
