Orlando City used its first of three second-round selections in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft on Wake Forest defensive midfielder Joey DeZart.

Joey DeZart grew up in Jackson, New Jersey before moving to YSC Academy in Pennsylvania. The midfielder played sparingly in his freshman year, only making three appearances. However, his role increased greatly during his sophomore year, as he played in 19 games and started 14. He continued to play a key role for the Demon Deacons, playing in 21 games during his junior year and 22 games during his senior season. He played a total of 65 games, starting 53, and recorded two goals in four assists.

DeZart primarily plays as a defensive midfielder, a position he succeeded at while playing at one of the premier programs in the country. He helped the defensive unit record 13 clean sheets in 2017, seven more in 2018, and 10 this past season.

What it Means for Orlando City

During the past three summers, DeZart has joined Reading United AC of USL League Two. The selection of DeZart benefits Orlando City as the team attempts to rebuild the defensive midfield following the departure of Cristian Higuita, Will Johnson, and Carlos Ascues. Along with returners Sebas Mendez and Uri Rosell, the club acquired Andres Perea last month on loan from Atletico Nacional and is expected to add Junior Urso in the coming days. DeZart is the fourth defensive midfielder on the current roster.
