Orlando City elected to stay on the road following the club’s penalty kick victory over Toluca in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals, traveling directly to Tennessee prior to the first of its two regular-season matches against Nashville SC. With the two sides entering level on points, this series may ultimately impact playoff seeding, depending on how the two teams finish.

Head Coach Oscar Pareja turned in a starting 11 team sheet that featured an extremely rotated squad, with several bench players getting the starting nod and newly acquired defender Adrian Marin making his Orlando City debut. To put it nicely, the rotation changes did not work out in Orlando’s favor as the Lions were throttled, 5-1, in their worst loss of the season.

What follows are my five takeaways from a match that I have already forgotten about as I now turn my attention to the Leagues Cup semifinals.

Surrendering the Lead Early

Nashville’s “big two” of Sam Surridge and Hany Mukhtar have produced the vast majority of the team’s goal contributions in 2025, so it was imperative for the Lions to always have a body on or keep eyes on those two attackers when in possession. Instead, Surridge and Mukhtar combined for four goals and two assists. It took just over two minutes of match time for the duo to link up, with Mukhtar slipping a pass through the back line and Surridge finding the back of the net. Mukhtar scored the first of his two goals in the 17th minute, and the match was practically over before it began. Orlando’s defense had its worst half of the season and both Nashville stars recorded first-half braces.

No Space at the Top

One of Ramiro Enrique’s strengths as a striker is his ability to run in behind, which affects defenders’ positioning and creates gaps in the opposition’s defensive shape. While Orlando was leaving too much space in its own defense, Enrique kept dropping deeper to get on the ball at the other end, which made the hosts more compact and difficult to break down in the first half. While players like Luis Muriel and Martin Ojeda can pull this off when playing up top, it is not Enrique’s strong suit. When Enrique collected the ball, near midfield, Orlando’s best scoring threat was far from goal and was unable to send Tyrese Spicer or Nico Rodriguez into space. With a lack of minutes on the pitch together, Enrique, Spicer, and Rodriguez seemed unsure of how to operate together.

Capitulation Before the Break

Had Orlando City been able to get to the break down 2-0, Pareja had plenty of firepower on the bench and a full 45 minute to go after a result. But the hosts put the game away in the final moments before halftime. And it was the few regular starters on the pitch who were mostly at fault. Cesar Araujo’s blind pass in his own half was off line was intercepted, and although he took the wide attacker to try to slow down the counter, he failed to prevent the cross into the box. Captain Robin Jansson was near Mukhtar but was paying him no attention, instead watching the ball come in. That left Mukhtar just enough space for a volley shot, and the lead bulged to 3-0. Surridge was hardly bothered by Rodrigo Schlegel in the air just moments later and Nashville SC went to the break up 4-0 with the game already in hand.

Consolation Goal

Perhaps the only bright spot in the game for Orlando City was spoiling Nashville’s shutout. Second half substitute Luis Muriel entered in the 74th minute of the match and quickly made an impact, illustrating how a closer halftime score could have affected the outcome. The Colombian striker took a good pass from Marin and sent Spicer to the end line. Spicer’s return centering pass was off line, but the defender could only deflect it straight to Muriel, who calmly slotted home a right-footed shot, beating Nashville goalkeeper Joe Willis.

Short Stay

As quickly as Muriel left his mark on the match in a positive way, he departed and left his team a man short. Referee Tim Ford sent Muriel off after just seven minutes off the bench and five minutes after his goal. After winning a throw-in, Muriel wanted to restart the game quickly, but Ahmed Qasem wouldn’t give up the ball. Muriel tried to swipe at the ball and then gave Qasem a little extra with another swipe, hitting the Nashville midfielder in the shoulder and perhaps grazing the side of his head. Ford displayed his red card and Muriel’s night was over, preventing any further cosmetic offense from dampening the team’s hit in goal differential. In fact, Nashville added another goal in stoppage time.

In the big picture, it’s only one loss, albeit a bad one. Orlando City’s position in the table wasn’t greatly affected, but the Lions missed an opportunity to gain points in a tight Eastern Conference race. The men in purple were able to rest MVP candidate Martin Ojeda for the full match, and other starters such as Alex Freeman, Marco Pasalic, and Eduard Atuesta only played sparing minutes in the second half.

The team will now turn its attention to the Leagues Cup semifinal on Wednesday. Let us know what else stood out to you from a disappointing road loss to Nashville SC in the comments below, and as always, vamos Orlando!
