Orlando Pride vs. Chorrillo FC, Concacaf W Champions Cup: Preview, How to Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Lineups, Match Thread, and More
The Pride look to keep their perfect record going in the Concacaf W Champions Cup as they play their first-ever international away game against Chorrillo FC in Panama.
Welcome to your match thread as the Orlando Pride (1-0-0, 3 points) continue their Concacaf W Champions Cup campaign against Chorrillo FC (0-2-0, 0 points). This is the first time these teams have ever met.
Here’s everything you need to know about tonight’s game.
History
There’s no history between these two teams as they’ve never faced each other in any competition. The coaches haven’t coached in the other league and there is no crossover for the players either. In fact, the Pride have never faced a team from Panama before.
Like the Pride, this is the first time the Pride have taken part in an international competition. Chorrillo FC is making its debut in this competition.
Overview
The Pride have been struggling in the league, to say the least. They were doing relatively well keeping pace with the Kansas City Current atop the NWSL until the summer break. However, it all soon fell apart.
The team’s winless streak started on June 20 with a 2-0 loss to Racing Louisville. There wasn’t much of a concern about one game, especially since it followed a three-game winning streak. But the team has failed to win in its next seven league games. Most recently, the Pride lost 5-2 to the Chicago Stars and then drew 1-1 with Bay FC Saturday afternoon, snapping a three-game losing streak in the league.
However, in the middle of that streak was a 3-0 win over LD Alajuelense at home, getting Orlando’s Champions Cup campaign off to a strong start. Julie Doyle scored in the 49th minute, ending a 320-minute drought. It was the first goal by a Pride player in 428 minutes, having scored only on an opposition own goal in that span.
While the Pride have struggled recently in the league, tonight shouldn’t be much trouble. As shown in the first game, even the champions of many Central American countries can’t compete against mid-level NWSL teams. The Pride had heavy rotation against Alajuelense with only two or three regular starters. Still, they dominated the game from start to finish. However, Concacaf matches on the road can be unpredictable, so Orlando will need to play as mistake-free as possible.
Chorrillo FC is the second Panamanian side to compete in this young competition. Tonight’s hosts secured their qualification by winning the Super Final, a game between the 2024 Apertura and Clausura champions. It was the club’s sixth domestic title, previously winning the league in 2015, 2016, the 2018 Apertura, the 2019 Clausura, and the 2019 Apertura.
Chorrillo FC is the first and third names this club has taken on since its founding. Originally Chorrillo FC, the side rebranded to CD Universitario before returning to the original name in 2023.
Tonight’s opponent has had a tough run in its first two games of the competition. Chorrillo lost 6-0 away to Pachuca and then returned home, losing 9-0 to Club America. It doesn’t get any easier tonight, hosting arguably the best team in the group.
The Pride currently sit in third in Group A behind Club America and Pachuca. Club America has four points and Pachuca has three, but they hold a +6 goal difference to the Pride’s +3, and obviously America has played one more game. Tonight, the Pride have the opportunity to top Group A after their first two of four games.
