Welcome to your match thread for a Wednesday night Leagues Cup matchup between Orlando City and Liga MX side CF Monterrey at the building formerly known as Orlando City Stadium (7:30 p.m., Apple TV). Tonight’s meeting is the first between these two sides.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of the match.

History

As this is the first-ever clash between these two clubs, there is no history between them. Orlando City is 3-2-7 in competitive matches against Liga MX teams.

Match Overview

Orlando City is coming off a 3-2 road loss against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. A terrible first half and a spotty defensive effort all game long was enough to sink the Lions, who fought back well in the second half but couldn’t get back on level terms with the hosts. It was Orlando’s first loss since Antoine Griezmann joined the team, and it showed that even with the club’s new high-profile Designated Player, the Lions simply have no margin for error when it comes to wins and losses in 2026 and 45 minutes of lackluster play can put a game out of reach.

Monterrey is 2-1-0 and sits fifth in the Liga MX table, having beaten Santos Laguna and Atlas and losing to Necaxa on the road while down a man for 70 minutes. The Rayados‘ most recent match was a 2-0 win over Atlas on the road Saturday. It was the first time former Chicago Fire Designated Player Hugo Cuypers started for his new club, alongside former Columbus Crew Designated Player Diego Rossi. Both habitual Lion killers are joined by former FC Cincinnati fullback Luca Orellano, so there are some familiar faces on the Liga MX side. Rossi, in fact, scored in that win over Atlas. Fun fact: Monterrey has picked up a red card in each of its last two matches in Liga MX play.

As is usual with matches against Liga MX clubs, Orlando must stay focused defensively for the entirety of the game, and the priorities should be taking care of the ball while being quick to transition back defensively if the attack turns it over. Monterrey’s defense allows one goal per game on average on the young season.

“We are very excited competing in the Leagues Cup,” Orlando City interim head coach Martin Perelman said ahead of the match. “It’s an honor for us in facing Monterrey, Leon, and San Luis in the first stage, so very excited. Ready for this challenge.”
