Report: Orlando City Spurned in Transfer Bid for Dax McCarty

Orlando City has tried to acquire midfielder and Winter Park, FL native Dax McCarty from New York Red Bulls, according to an online report. The Lions offered a substantial bid for the central midfielder, according to Big Apple Soccer’s Kristian Dyer, including multiple draft picks and $225,000 in allocation money.

That’s not small potatoes.

If this was indeed Orlando City’s offer, it shows a serious interest in the former FC Dallas and D.C. United man, as well as an even more serious intent by RBNY to keep its player. He certainly fits the profile of the type of player Adrian Heath is stocking his club with-McCarty has a wealth of MLS experience and yet is still just 27 years old, so there’s plenty more tread on those tires.

The sixth selection overall in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft out of North Carolina, McCarty played with FC Dallas from 2006-10, scoring five goals in 93 appearances. He also helped the club reach the 2010 MLS Cup.

The Portland Timbers grabbed him from Dallas with the first pick in the MLS Expansion Draft in Nov. 2010. The Timbers immediately sent him to D.C. United along with allocation money in exchange for Rodney Wallace and a fourth-round pick.

He played in 13 matches with United and was selected team captain, but D.C. traded him to New York in June of 2011 for Dwayne De Rosario and quickly became a fixture at central midfield. McCarty has scored 10 goals in 110 appearances with New York since 2011. He has started 30 games each season he’s been with RBNY.

He has also played internationally with the U.S. U-20, U-23, and senior national teams, with five caps with the USMNT.

Some were absolutely convinced the rejection of this transfer was not McCarty’s decision.

McCarty would be an outstanding addition to an already formidable and growing Orlando City lineup. We’ll monitor this situation to see if there are any further developments.
