Orlando City Defender Conor Donovan Recalled to U-20 USMNT
Orlando City central defender Conor Donovan has been called up to the U-20 U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) for its upcoming training camp in Linz, Austria from April 18-26. It’s Donovan’s second foreign camp of the year for U.S. coach Tab Ramos, while fellow Lions Tommy Redding and Tyler Turner were left off the roster again.
The camp will feature friendlies at Red Bull Arena in Wals-Siezenheim, Austria, against Qatar’s U-20 World Cup side on April 21 and Croatia on April 25. The U.S. side continues preparations for the 2015 U-20 FIFA World Cup in New Zealand May 30-June 20.
Interestingly, Ramos is only taking six defenders for the two fixtures.
Donovan, 19, was the first selection in the second round of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft (22nd overall). The Generation Adidas defender has three international goals to his credit. He tallied one goal and one assist in 15 games with North Carolina State, but has yet to see game action with Orlando.
What does this mean for Orlando City?
Donovan will not be available for Saturday’s match at Columbus Crew SC and is likely out for the April 26 home match against Toronto FC. If City’s central defenders can stay healthy and suspension-free Saturday, it shouldn’t affect anything other than training depth.
Lions Head Coach Adrian Heath was unlikely to name Donovan in the 18 in either game with Sean St. Ledger available. If one central defender is unavailable, St. Ledger would step in and Redding would likely make the 18. If two are unavailable, Redding would likely play his first MLS match against Toronto or Heath could deploy Amobi Okugo in that position.
