Transfer Rumors: Ghanaians Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari Linked to Orlando City Move
Another week, another transfer rumor involving Orlando City SC.
The Lions have recently been linked with a U.S. move by Ghanaian midfielders Michael Essien and Sulley Ali Muntari – both currently with Kaká’s former club, AC Milan.
The rumor comes courtesy of TuttoSport and the complete evolution of these recent whisperings was broken down in great detail by Once a Metro, because New York Red Bulls have also been linked to Essien and Muntari.
As OaM pointed out, GhanaWeb.com claims that Muntari has already nixed the idea of moving to MLS, but there is no direct quote from the player. The 32-year-old Essien, meanwhile, may be on the downside of his career, making just 25 league appearances over the last three seasons, according to soccerway.com.
Do these latest rumors make sense? Nah. Not really, particularly if they are a package deal.
Unless Adrian Heath has lost faith in some of his midfielders, including Kevin Molino or Carlos Rivas, the club doesn’t seem to have a spot for the Milan duo. Also, the Lions’ front office would have to come up with the cash, because neither player would be likely to leave Europe unless the price was right.
Chalk this one up to Orlando City being Orlando City. The Lions will continue to be linked to quality players rumored to be making a move to the U.S.
What do you think? Are you interested in either/both of the Ghanaian internationals?
