Orlando City’s Odds of Signing Chicharito Fading
If you were hoping to see buckets of goals scored by Mexican international striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, well…it's probably not happening, writes Paul Tenorio of the Orlando Sentinel.
Negotiations between MLS and the star Mexican forward have stalled due to Chicharito’s asking price, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the talks.
Chicharito is asking for north of $10 million per year in salary, a number that would make him by far the highest-paid player in the league. That number also does not factor in the transfer fee, with Manchester United reportedly asking in the $12 million range.
Chances a deal gets done in the summer transfer window — which opens on Wednesday and runs through Aug. 6 — has dropped into the single digits, according to one source.
Unfortunately, that’s a lot to ask for an MLS club, even one with ambitions to spend money on top talent. It’s nice to know that Orlando City is at least having these conversations because this would not have happened just a year or two ago in MLS.
