Welcome to your open thread for Gold Cup second-game freedom, as we get set to watch the United States Men's National Team take on Haiti in Group A play in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Tonight's match takes place in Foxborough, MA. Game time is 8:30 p.m. (ET).

The USMNT opened the Gold Cup on Tuesday night with a 2-1 win over Honduras. The Yanks got a pair of goals off set pieces by Clint Dempsey (25', 64'), playing in his home state of Texas. Carlos Discua pulled one back in the 70th minute for a strong Honduran side that carried the run of play for large portions of the match. Honduras is playing Panama in the early Group A game.

It wasn't the sharpest match for the U.S., but three points is still three points. Maybe the men are emulating the women and saving their best for the knockout round. We can hope. Honduras is ostensibly the best of the Group A opponents, so Jurgen Klinsmann may tinker with his roster over the next couple of matches. It was a tough night on Tuesday for several U.S. starters, including defender Ventura Alvarado, Timmy Chandler had trouble completing passes, and neither Fabian Johnson nor DeAndre Yedlin could consistently get involved in the attack. But the Americans prevailed.

Klinsmann's troops must perform better if they want to win Group A and get deep into this tournament.

The History

The USMNT actually has a pretty forgettable history against Haiti. The U.S. is just 6-9-6 in the all-time series, owing largely to a horrific 4-9-4 mark from the 1940s through the 70s (Note: Wikipedia doesn't recognize any meetings prior to 1950, so take these numbers with a grain of salt). America is 1-1-2 on home soil against the Haitians. They've met twice previously in the Gold Cup.

The first ever meeting is reportedly a 4-1 Haiti win in Port-au-Prince in 1941. But the earliest match report I found was a 3-2 victory for the USA in World Cup qualifying on April 3, 1954, in Port-au-Prince's Stade Paul Magloire. Cornelius "Neil" Casey opened the scoring in the 20th minute to notch his sole international goal in four career caps with the U.S. Efrain Chachurian likewise scored his only international goal in four caps in the match, and Bill Looby added the third. A day later, the teams met again in Haiti with Looby netting a brace in a 3-0 win.

The two countries first met in Gold Cup play on Feb. 12, 2000 in the Group B opener, with the U.S. winning 3-0 in Miami's Orange Bowl, in front of 49,591 fans. Jovan Kirovski (18'), Eric Wynalda (55', pen) and Cobi Jones (89') supplied the offense and Brad Friedel kept the clean sheet.

The teams have also met before at Gillette Stadium in Gold Cup play, drawing 2-2 in Group B on July 11, 2009. Davy Arnaud opened the scoring in the sixth minute, but Haiti got goals three minutes apart by Vaniel Sirin (46') and Mones Chery (49') to take a 2-1 lead. The Haitians seemed poised for the upset until Stu Holden scored in the 92nd minute to level the match in stoppage time.

It was the only game of the tournament the Americans didn't win until the final, where they got blasted 5-0 by the Mexicans.

* * *

Can the Americans bounce back after a sluggish opening game against the Hondurans and level the all-time series vs. Haiti? Will the back line ever not scare the hell out of us? Did Michael Bradley get a cake for his 100th cap on Tuesday?

We should hopefully find out some of those answers tonight.

Go America!

  • Absolutely no links to illegal streams. They can get us in trouble, and no one wants that.
  • Try not to be “that guy” who spews nothing but venom and hate for the team. It’s ok to be critical, and, let’s face it, sometimes even the best teams can be frustrating to watch, but being overly negative relentlessly can sap the enjoyment for others.
  • Keep it somewhat clean and fair when criticizing players / officials. You never know who might be reading.
  • Do unto others in the match thread, the way you would have others do unto you. We are a fun community and want to keep it this way. We have a moderator, but we’d rather let him enjoy the game instead of having to play babysitter.
  • Finally, we don’t have a rule against profanity but don’t abuse the non-rule. Also, any language that is sexist, racist, or homophobic in nature will be swiftly deleted and you may lose posting privileges. We’re all in this together.
