USWNT Cancels Victory Tour Match in Honolulu vs. Trinidad & Tobago

If you were ready to get your American Outlaw on today, sorry folks. The USWNT has canceled its Victory Tour friendly in Honolulu against Trinidad & Tobago scheduled for tonight at 8 p.m. ET due to pitch conditions. The artificial turf field, which may have played a role in Megan Rapinoe tearing her ACL, is in pretty bad shape.

How bad? Well…

U.S. Soccer announced today's cancellation in the first story linked above, saying:

Upon testing the playing surface during the WNT's training session earlier on Dec. 5, and after all possible options available were considered to get the field in a playable condition, the decision was made by U.S. Soccer to cancel the match.

"We extend our sincere apologies to those fans who were scheduled to attend the U.S. Women's National Team match in Hawaii," said U.S. Soccer spokesman Neil Buethe. "Player safety is our number one priority at all times and after a thorough inspection throughout the day, we determined it was in the best interest for both teams to not play the match. We regret not being able to play in front of our fantastic, loyal fans."

It's unfortunate for USWNT fans in Hawaii, as this was to be the team's historic first-ever appearance in the 50th state. Those fans will get refunds, but what about those American Outlaws who flew to Hawaii to see the game? They obviously won't get their travel funds back. Player safety is paramount, of course, but it's not a good look when you award a city a game and they can't put together a playable surface between the awarding of the game and the day of the match.

Hopefully U.S. Soccer will develop a better process when awarding games to minimize the chance of this happening again.

The good news for Orlando Pride fans is that it's one fewer game on artificial turf for Alex Morgan and Ashlyn Harris.
