USA vs. Switzerland International Friendly II: Final Score 5-1 as USWNT Dominates Again

For the second time in five days the USWNT took on Switzerland and the result was pretty much the same. Last Wednesday, the U.S. blanked the Swiss, 4-0. It wouldn't be a shutout this time, but the U.S. did end up beating Switzerland again — 5-1 this time.

Just like last Wednesday, the game started pretty slowly for the U.S., and the Yanks gave up the first goal of the game to Switzerland. Unlike Wednesday, the U.S. got a goal in the first half from 2015 FIFA World Player of the Year, Carli Lloyd. In the second half, the floodgates opened with another score from Lloyd, and goals from Christen Press, Crystal Dunn, and newcomer Kealia Ohai.

The USWNT moved to 4-0 all time versus Switzerland, and remained undefeated in 2016 at 20-0-3. There were more fresh faces as Jill Ellis continues to work through the players to see what the future of the USWNT holds. For the second game in a row, a player getting their first cap, also got their first goal (Ohai). That's a trend I'm sure we all hope continues.

Switzerland scored the first goal in this game, on a counter attack in the seventh minute from Sandrine Mauron. The Swiss seemed determined to press harder in their second match in a week against the U.S. Mauron would later get a yellow card in the 18th minute.

The U.S. didn’t wait for the second half to get things going as Carli Lloyd blasted a long distance shot in the 25th minute to draw the USWNT even with the Swiss at 1-1. It was the type of goal that shows why Lloyd is one of the best in the world.

In the second half it was Lloyd again scoring on a one-touch strike after Press had her shot deflected. Lloyd actually started the attack from the U.S. side of the field and ended up finishing it in the 51st minute.

Press would get another chance in the 53rd minute and deftly lobbed a shot over Swiss keeper, Stenia Michel. Andi Sullivan put a great ball right over the top, allowing Press to finish with the goal.

Ten minutes later, Dunn would get in on the scoring frenzy putting one in the back of the net off a beautiful cross from Lynn Williams — enjoying her second cap — in the 63rd minute.

Finally, it was Ohai coming in and scoring in the 82nd minute. Ohai had only been on the field for a few moments in her first cap, before scoring her first goal. Welcome to the USWNT, Kealia!

Obviously, that was more than enough for the U.S. to finish off another win. Despite the slow start, the U.S. dominated the Swiss squad. The athleticism of the USWNT is clearly evident, especially in the second half as they wear down their opponents. Jill Ellis is bringing in the younger players, and mixing them in with the veterans. It's an experiment that seems to be working.

The USWNT will be back in action on Nov. 10, when the Yanks face Romania in San Jose, CA, at 10 p.m. ET.
