USA vs. Costa Rica World Cup Qualifier: How to Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Rosters, Match Thread and More

Welcome to your live match thread for the United States Men’s National Team at Costa Rica in Round 2 of World Cup qualifying in the CONCACAF Hexagonal. The USMNT will look to bounce back from a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Mexico Friday night, but they’ll have to do it in hostile territory against one of the better teams in CONCACAF in Los Ticos.

And, the Yanks will have to do it without goalkeeper Tim Howard, who left Friday’s match with an adductor injury that will keep him sidelined through the end of the MLS season.

The U.S. is 14-14-6 in the all-time series, however, the Ticos haven’t lost at home to the USMNT in World Cup qualifying, going 8-0-1 against the United States and winning the last eight in a row on home soil. So, the last time the USMNT earned a road point in qualifying in Costa Rica came way back in 1985. You may recall the last time the two nations squared off, which came in the group stage of this summer’s Copa America Centenario. The Yanks got the better of that match, 4-0.

Costa Rica tops the Hex after a 2-0 win at Trinidad & Tobago on Friday. Both players who scored for Costa Rica play their club soccer in the U.S. with MLS clubs. Christian Bolaños of the Vancouver Whitecaps and Ronald Matarrita of New York City FC found the net on Friday. Other faces on the Ticos you might recognize are defender Kendall Waston (Vancouver Whitecaps) and midfielder Johan Venegas (Montreal Impact).

Bobby Wood scored the lone goal for the United States on Friday, which tied the game in the second half. Unfortunately, the 89th-minute stunner by Rafa Marquez kind of ruined things. The U.S. will need clean games from Matt Besler, John Brooks, Timmy Chandler and Jermaine Jones, who are all sitting on a yellow card suspension with their next booking.

This match isn’t a must-win for the U.S., but the home loss to Mexico means the Yanks will need to try to find a way to at least earn a point on the road.
