Orlando Pride Issue Update on Alex Morgan

Those concerned that we’d seen the last of Alex Morgan in Orlando Pride purple can rest easy.

The club announced today that Morgan is officially returning to Orlando pending the receipt of her International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and rehabilitation of a hamstring issue sustained originally during the French league season and aggravated in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final on June 1. The Pride had Morgan undergo a scan at Orlando Health and it was determined her injury should keep her out approximately three to four weeks.

The 27-year-old captained the Pride during the club’s inaugural NWSL season in 2016, scoring four goals and adding an assist in 15 league appearances. Her season was largely interrupted by international duty as part of the 2016 U.S. Olympic team.  She played 1,350 minutes, firing team highs in shots (44) and shots on goal (20). Her four goals tied her for second on the team with Jasmyne Spencer, just two behind Kristen Edmonds.

Morgan has yet to start her 2017 NWSL campaign after joining Olympique Lyonnais on loan in December and helping that club win a treble – championships in the French Division 1 Féminine, the Coupe de France Féminine, and the Champions League.

Once Morgan is cleared for play she may be added to the Pride’s roster, although a move will have to be made to clear a spot on the 20-player roster unless someone goes on the disabled list. On the current timetable, her return would likely come in early July, potentially either July 1 vs. Chicago Red Stars or July 8 at the Washington Spirit.
