Welcome to your match thread for tonight’s match-up between Orlando City (8-10-7, 31 points) and the Vancouver Whitecaps (10-9-5, 35 points). This is the only meeting between the two teams this season. It will be Brek Shea’s first visit to Orlando as a member of the opposing side as he and Giles Barnes of the Lions will be going up against their old teams for the first time since being traded for one another prior to the season.

History

The Lions are 0-1-1 in the all-time series against Vancouver and this will be the third different Orlando City coach to face the Whitecaps in three MLS seasons. Julio Baptista and Cyle Larin brought Orlando from behind to draw 2-2 at BC Place last year under interim coach Bobby Murphy. Nicolas Mezquida and Masato Kudo scored for the Caps. Baptista had a chance to give the Lions all three points but skied a penalty over the bar.

The Whitecaps got the best of Orlando City deep in stoppage time in 2015 in the first meeting. Octavio Rivero’s flicked header off a Pedro Morales free kick beat Donovan Ricketts in the sixth minute of stoppage time, just moments after Vancouver’s Jordan Harvey was booked for time wasting in stoppage time. The goal was a gut punch that gave Vancouver a 1-0 win at the Citrus Bowl.

Match Overview

Orlando City is 0-4-2 in its last six outings and 0-2-3 in its last five at home, despite an overall respectable 6-3-4 mark at Orlando City Stadium. The Lions have two wins since April and have been free falling with no end in sight. Vancouver is 4-6-2 on the road in 2017 and 0-1-1 in their last two away from BC Place. But the Caps are on a good run of form with only one loss in the last five matches (2-1-2).

Kaká returns from his ludicrous red card suspension because reasons but Jonathan Spector (knee) remains out, and Will Johnson (ankle) joins him in street clothes for this one. Meanwhile, PC (adductor strain) is listed as day-to-day, and backup goalkeeper Josh Saunders (neck surgery) is out for the season. Vancouver lists David Edgar (PCL, MCL tear) and Matias Laba (torn ACL) as out. Toni Tchani will miss the game due to suspension after being sent off against Seattle on Wednesday.
