2018 SB Nation MLS Mock Draft: Orlando City Gets Wyatt Omsberg

With the sixth pick in the SBN Mock MLS SuperDraft, Orlando City selects Wyatt Omsberg!

Omsberg is a 6-foot-4, 180-pound center back from Dartmouth. The 22-year-old senior did better every year at Dartmouth and showed scouts his ability to progress and learn. He received an All-Ivy League Honorable Mention as a freshman, First-Team All-Ivy League in 2015, Third-Team All-America in 2016, and Second-Team All-America in his senior year. Omsberg was also the Ivy League Defender of the Year as a junior and senior.

The Scarborough, ME native played in 73 collegiate games, starting all but six of them. He also managed to find the back of the net 11 times while adding three assists.

Omsberg is a physically strong center back who commands the area. His towering figure makes him a threat in the air on both ends of the field, but he will need to be more aggressive to make a big impact at the top level. Orlando City Head Coach Jason Kreis would have an easy job coaching Omsberg in this respect, as he has shown that he is willing to learn.

A defensive midfielder in high school, Omsberg is confident on the ball and finds the open man. His passing ability is above average for a center back and is one of the main reasons why he is projected here in the top 10.

The other reason for his high draft spot are his physical assets. He is one of the biggest players in the draft, but he is also one of the fastest. In the 30-meter dash at the combine, Omsberg finished second and placed fourth in the agility test, beating out every other center back. Jonathan Spector and José Aja both lack speed, so Omsberg could see time against bigger and faster opposition.

He will most likely need some coaching up, but he could challenge Aja for a starting spot. He has a high ceiling and the potential to be a longtime MLS starter, but there will be some growing pains. The Ivy League star is one of the top defenders in the draft, and center back is one of Orlando City’s current areas of need. While he was not the best player available, he fits the team well and, if he reaches his full potential, will be a player that Orlando City fans can trust in the back.
