Welcome to your live thread for the United States Women's National Team’s opening game of 2018. The Yanks start the new year with a friendly match against Denmark at 7:30 p.m. ET at San Diego’s SDCCU Stadium. The match can be seen on ESPN.

Orlando Pride stars Alex Morgan and Ashlyn Harris are on the U.S. roster. Morgan seems likely to play, while Alyssa Naeher seems to be Jill Ellis’ preferred option at goalkeeper, so we may not see Harris. Morgan enters the year with 80 career goals — second among active U.S. players to Carli Lloyd (98) and in seventh place on the all-time USWNT scoring list.

There are some new faces in camp with the United States who could see action, including Savannah McCaskill — the second overall pick in Thursday’s NWSL College Draft — Portland Thorns goalkeeper Adrianna Franch, and Stanford defender Tierna Davidson, who will join the U-20 USWNT following tonight’s match.

The USWNT is 16-5-3 in 24 previous meetings with Denmark, currently ranked No. 12 in the world and runners-up in the 2017 UEFA Women’s Euro. The most recent meeting saw Denmark win, 5-3, in the 2014 Algarve Cup in Portugal. It was the most goals allowed in a game by the USWNT. The U.S. has lost only four times in its first match of a calendar year (27-4-2) and all four were away. The Yanks have opened the year against Denmark on two prior occasions and won both games by 2-0 score lines.

The big name that jumps out for Denmark is striker Nadia Nadim, a member of the 2017 Portland Thorns NWSL championship team. Nadim scored 15 goals with the Thorns over 37 games in 2016 and 2017 before moving on after last season to Manchester City. She previously played two seasons with Sky Blue FC in 2014 and 2015, scoring 13 goals in 24 appearances.

Oh, and one other thing: the U.S. will honor goalkeeper Hope Solo for reaching 200 caps at tonight’s match. Solo is currently running for USSF president.

Match Thread Rules

This is your live thread for posting comments on the match. So use our comments section below to talk about the game in real time with other supporters. If you're new, welcome to our happy home! While you're here, please observe a few basic rules:

  • Absolutely no links to illegal streams. They can get us in trouble, and no one wants that.
  • Try not to be "that guy" who spews nothing but venom and hate for the team. It's OK to be critical, and, let's face it, sometimes even the best teams can be frustrating to watch, but being overly negative relentlessly can sap the enjoyment for others.
  • Keep it somewhat clean and fair when criticizing players / officials. You never know who might be reading.
  • Do unto others in the match thread, the way you would have others do unto you. We are a fun community and want to keep it this way. We have a moderator, but we'd rather let him enjoy the game instead of having to play babysitter.

Enjoy the match. Go America!
